This provision is good

 The childminder observes children at play and provides good activities that extend and encourage their skills. Children are motivated and engaged. They make good progress.  Children receive effective support to develop their language skills. For instance, the childminder listens attentively and extends children's single words into simple sentences.  Children actively demonstrate their increasing physical coordination and balance as they play indoors and in the garden. For example, they eagerly explore the low-level climbing frame and slide, bounce on the small trampoline and climb stairs with increasing skill.  The childminder is a positive role model. She is kind and attentive and shows, children her interest and delight in their achievements. The childminder creates a warm, nurturing and enjoyable environment where children settle quickly and behave well.  The childminder undertakes relevant short courses to increase her knowledge and

professional skills. This enhances her abilities to confidently and successfully meet and understand children's individual developmental needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Overall, self-evaluation works well. However, the childminder does not include the views of parents sufficiently to help her identify areas for further focused development.  Occasionally, the childminder does not use opportunities to ask questions that test and challenge children's thinking further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 enhance the self-evaluation process to include the views of parents, to help identify further areas to improve  develop teaching skills further to test and challenge children's thinking more as they play.

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the premises and reviewed resources with the childminder.  The inspector observed the childminder and children undertaking their activities.  The inspector discussed activities with the childminder.  The inspector considered the views of parents.  The inspector reviewed a selection of documentation and records provided by the childminder and discussed self-evaluation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the action she must take if she is concerned for the welfare of a child. She completes thorough risk assessments and encourages children to develop their awareness of safe behaviours. A clear fire evacuation procedure helps the childminder to ensure they can evacuate the premises promptly. The childminder develops positive working relationships with professionals and parents. She encourages parents to share information about children's activities and progress at home to ensure continuity in care and learning. Careful observation and monitoring of progress enables the childminder to identify and address any gaps in children's learning swiftly.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder encourages children's communication and language skills well overall. For example, she models language for the young children to copy and provides a simple narrative to their activities. The childminder supports children's early mathematical skills successfully. For example, children count and touch the numbers on the number line poster as they name each numeral. She encourages their awareness of 'up' and 'down' as they bounce on the small trampoline. Children increase their hand-to-eye coordination well, for instance, as they dig in the sand and fill various containers.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has thoughtfully organised her resources to promote children's interests, independence and curiosity. Children thoroughly enjoy their outdoor play. They benefit from the freedom to explore and develop their physical skills. The childminder encourages children to be physically active, enjoy a healthy diet and follow sensible hygiene routines. This increases their awareness of a healthy lifestyle. Children participate in many age- appropriate activities in the local community with the childminder, where they meet other adults and children, and learn about the roles people do. This helps to promote their social skills and awareness of the wider world.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children demonstrate increasing levels of concentration as they play. They are becoming independent and developing their abilities to make their needs known. Children listen to stories and enjoy songs and rhymes, learning to recall the words and actions. This inspires children's imaginations, promotes listening and speaking skills, and an interest in books. Children are encouraged to listen, follow simple instructions and manage simple tasks for themselves. They use chalks to make marks and learn that print has meaning. Children develop the skills they need to prepare them for their move to school.
