Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector viewed children's records and looked at evidence of the suitability of adults living and working in the household. The inspector jointly evaluated an activity with the childminder. The inspector took account of the views of parents through their written comments.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder shows a good awareness of the signs that might lead to concerns about a child's welfare. She has completed training to refresh her knowledge of child protection procedures and wider safeguarding issues. She ensures that her policies and procedures are up to date to further support children's safety and welfare. The childminder completes risk assessments of her home and garden to ensure that they are safe, suitable and secure. Through her own self-evaluation and the views of children and parents, she reflects on the quality of her provision to help her to identify where she can make further improvements. The childminder has strong links with the local pre-school and school that children attend and information is shared well to ensure continuity of care.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The qualified childminder uses her experience, skills and knowledge well, overall. She understands how children learn and develop. This helps her to plan stimulating activities that capture children's enthusiasm and maintains their interest. For example, children spend a considerable amount of time exploring 'snow' and small-world toys. Through effective questioning from the childminder and trial and error children work out the best way to free toy penguins encased in ice. They place them in warm water and share their excitement with the childminder as the ice melts. Children are confident to ask for additional resources to build on their ideas. For example, containers and spoons so they can mix water and 'snow' together. During activities and routines, children develop an awareness of mathematics. They paint patterns on ice blocks and count the number of stairs as they climb them.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder establishes warm and caring relationships with children in her care. Children are confident to share their ideas and express their needs with the childminder. They benefit from a variety of outings. Children are taken on regular visits in the local area and attend various community groups with the childminder. Through this, children have opportunities to meet other people, use alternative play equipment and learn about the world around them. The childminder helps children to learn about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle. She encourages them to eat nutritious food, follow good hygiene routines and be physically active.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress and gain the relevant skills needed for when they move on to their next stage in learning and school. They demonstrate good concentration skills as they become absorbed in their play. Children are confident talkers. They take part in meaningful conversations with the childminder and their friends during routines and play. Children use their imagination and problem-solving skills as they work out the best way to build an igloo out of the available construction resources.
