This provision is good
The childminder seeks the views of others, including parents, children and early years advisers. She uses this information, alongside her own assessments, to evaluate the quality of her provision and how well she caters for children's needs. This helps her to identify what she does well and to target her plans for improvement effectively. Children build caring bonds with the childminder and her family, and demonstrate that they are very happy and secure in the childminder's welcoming home. For example, children confidently choose the toys and resources they wish to play with. Outcomes for children are good. The childminder helps children to make positive choices about the food they eat. For example, she works in partnership with parents to ensure that snacks provided for children are healthy and nutritious. Children develop a keen interest in books. They enjoy listening to favourite stories and

join in enthusiastically as they recall familiar words and phrases. Parents speak highly of the childminder's service. They feel that the childminder cares for their children well and keeps them well informed of daily events and routines.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Although the childminder provides a very safe environment for children, she sometimes fails to take all opportunities to help them understand risks and learn how to keep themselves safe.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

provide children with consistent guidance on how to recognise risks, and help them to develop the knowledge and skills they need to keep themselves safe.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed a range of indoor activities and discussed these with the childminder, to assess the quality of teaching and its impact on children's learning. The inspector had discussions with the childminder at various points throughout the inspection. She also spoke to children during the inspection and considered their views and experiences. The inspector looked at a sample of documentation. The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their views, along with reading parents' written feedback. The inspector accompanied the childminder as she collected children from school and observed her communications with school staff.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder is qualified and well organised. She shows commitment to continually developing her professional practice. For example, she regularly accesses further training and uses new skills and knowledge effectively to improve her provision and enhance children's learning. For instance, recent training has helped her learn new strategies to monitor and support children's communication skills more effectively. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of the signs which might indicate a child is at risk from harm. She is confident about how she should report any concerns about children's safety or welfare.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder regularly assesses children's progress and asks them about their interests and preferences. She exchanges information on children's learning with their parents and with teachers at the schools that they attend. This helps her to plan a good range of activities that engages the children and builds on what they already know. Children enjoy discovering how to operate simple electronic toys. For instance, they learn how to manoeuvre the levers on a remote-controlled train to make it move in different directions. Children develop important mathematical skills. For example, during an activity they carefully matched plastic shapes to their corresponding outlines. They were interested to find out the names of unfamiliar shapes and enjoyed drawing around them to make pictures.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children enjoy regular fresh air and exercise. For instance, they walk to and from school with the childminder and enjoy visiting open spaces, such as a riverside park, near the childminder's home. The childminder acts as a very positive role model for children. She is calm and kind, and teaches children important social skills, such as sharing and taking turns. Children are well behaved in the childminder's care. The childminder encourages children to be independent and begin to manage their own personal needs. She supports children to develop beneficial hygiene routines, such as regular handwashing, to help support their good health.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are enthusiastic and motivated learners. They develop a good range of skills and make steady progress towards the next stages in their development. Children show confidence as they select resources to support their independent play and enjoy setting themselves challenges. For example, they persevered with the difficult task of joining pieces of track together to form a road for their toy cars. Children concentrate well and enjoy seeing tasks through until the end. For instance, they spent a long time carefully threading beads onto laces to create long necklaces.
