This provision is good
Children are happy and secure at this calm, well-run setting. The childminder and her assistant provide a caring and kind environment. Children form strong bonds with them and build trusting relationships. Partnerships with parents are good. Parents value the childminder's flexibility. They welcome regular two-way exchange of information that helps provide continuity in care and learning. The childminder provides a range of relevant, exciting activities. These include visits to nearby places of interest, such as parks, the beach and woodland areas. Children are helped to make good progress from their starting points. They achieve and sometimes exceed typical levels of development for their age and stage. Children are well prepared for their next stage of learning, including school.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not specifically target the next steps in children's learning and development, in particular to help high-achieving children make exceptional levels of progress. Although the childminder encourages children's language development well overall, she occasionally misses the opportunity to extend their vocabulary further.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of adults working and living on the premises. She checked the childminder's and assistant's first-aid and safeguarding qualifications and looked at children's records. The inspector observed and discussed the interaction between the childminder and the children, and between the childminder's assistant and the children. She assessed the impact this has on children's learning and development. The childminder discussed the self-evaluation process with the childminder and agreed strengths and areas for development. The inspector spoke with parents and took account of their feedback. The inspector viewed the areas of the home indoors and outdoors used by children.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant understand their responsibility to keep children safe. They know the signs that may indicate a concern about a child's welfare and what to do. The childminder ensures her assistant is kept fully up to date with relevant safeguarding and first-aid training. She monitors her assistant's work effectively. The childminder accurately evaluates the strengths and areas for development of the setting. She knows how to develop the setting to further improve children's outcomes and has plans to improve the planning of highly challenging activities.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides children with a good range of appropriate resources and exciting learning experiences. For example, children choose their favourite books from an easily accessible library. The younger children enjoy playing with toy cars. They learn how these move across different surfaces and develop their coordination skills as they push the vehicles. All children enjoy exciting visits to areas of local interest. They delight in looking at the photographs and with adult support they remember experiences, such as walking on different surfaces. The childminder knows the importance of promoting children's mathematical skills. She comments on shapes and encourages children to count.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are content and thrive in this nurturing environment. The childminder and her assistant meet the children's care needs well. They act as good role models and encourage children to develop positive relationships with each other. Children play alongside each other calmly and respectfully. They know the routines. For example, they know where their favourite toys are kept and can find them independently. The childminder responds well to children's changing needs and interests. For example, children can choose from a range of appropriate activities which include quiet activities, such as reading on a cosy sofa and more-active pursuits, such as ride-on toys. The childminder promotes healthy eating and children enjoy appropriate snacks that include fruit and vegetables. She discusses healthy exercise and sleep patterns with parents.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress across all areas of learning from their starting points. They learn to concentrate and get along well with their peers. Their physical skills are developing well. Younger children shape dough and use tools, such as sticks and moulds. This strengthens their fingers in preparation for learning to write. Children of all ages learn to safely explore and appreciate the natural environment through well-planned visits to local areas of interest. Children enjoy counting and singing familiar songs.
