This provision is good

 Children build secure attachments with the childminder, which helps support their emotional and physical well-being.  The childminder closely observes children's play and assesses their progress accurately to help her identify what children need to learn next. Children make good progress in their learning.  Children's communication is promoted well. For example, the childminder uses children's home languages alongside English to help build on their developing language skills.  Partnerships with parents and other settings that children attend are effective. A regular two-way exchange of information helps to provide continuity of care for children.  Children benefit from the provision of healthy and home-cooked food.  The childminder continually reviews her practice, for example, by seeking the views of parents, to help her identify ways she can improve the service she offers.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not take full advantage of all opportunities to further support the children's mathematical development.  The childminder does not consistently make the most of opportunities to encourage children's early writing skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide greater opportunities for children to develop their understanding of number, shape, size and measurement  increase chances for children to develop their early literacy skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and the children, and reviewed the play equipment and resources.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection, including to discuss the impact of teaching after viewing activities.  The inspector viewed the areas of the premises used for childminding and talked to the children at appropriate times.  The inspector looked at documentation, including a sample of children's records.  The inspector discussed how the childminder evaluates her provision.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of her responsibility to protect children. She continues to increase her knowledge and skills, such as by doing safeguarding training updates. The childminder helps children to learn how to keep themselves safe, such as by teaching them to cross roads safely on outings. She evaluates her provision and skills effectively to help her improve outcomes for children. For example, she has developed creative activities further to encourage boys to participate more. The childminder keeps parents well informed about their children's development. She offers suggestions of ways that parents can support children's learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder takes account of children's interests and preferences to successfully plan a stimulating learning environment. For example, children chose dinosaur toys for props at rhyme time and the childminder quickly adapted the songs to include dinosaurs. The young children are fascinated as they explore and discover the different textures of objects in a sensory basket. The childminder continually talks to children, to describe what they are doing and introduce words and sounds to extend their learning experiences. Children have good opportunities to use their imaginations and participate in creative play, such as painting activities and modelling play dough.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are provided with a warm, welcoming environment. The childminder liaises with parents constantly to enable her to meet children's individual needs well. She develops strong, positive relationships with children to help them develop a good sense of security. Children show growing confidence as they make independent choices about their play, such as selecting the play food to make a picnic. Children enjoy regular opportunities to take part in outdoor activities to help support their physical development and ensure that they get regular fresh air and exercise. For example, children use large play equipment at local parks that challenge their individual capabilities and help them make further progress.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy and settled. They are prepared well for their future learning and move on to school. Children cooperate and show kindness towards others in their play, for example, as they share and take turns with the crocodile puppet during song time. Children go on weekly visits to the local library, for instance, to enable them to enjoy a greater range of books and stories, such as books linked to their love of football.
