The inspected spoke to the childminder and children at convenient times throughout the inspection. The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's training and suitability. She looked at relevant documentation and discussed the childminder's self-evaluation and children's learning. The inspector took account of the views of parents from their written comments provided by the childminder.

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a strong understanding of child protection matters. She identifies and minimises the risks to children in her own home and within the local community. The childminder knows what actions to take should a child be at risk of harm. The childminder attends first-aid training. She knows how to respond to emergencies when they arise. Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The knowledgeable childminder observes children at play. She uses the information well to assess the good progress children make. The childminder plans exciting activities that reflect children's interests. For example, she helps children to investigate ice when they show an interest in the change of season to winter. Consequently, children are enthusiastic and enjoy their learning. The childminder becomes fully involved in children's play. She joins in with the games and laughter, creating a relaxed environment in which children develop their confidence. The childminder values children's contributions by listening with interest and offering high levels of praise. This encourages children to follow and test out their ideas in their play. For example, children enjoy using straws and connectors to make three-dimensional structures of a house and a Christmas tree.

Children develop their physical skills and learn how to keep safe while swinging from branches of trees in the park. They enjoy hunting for bug hotels and collect conkers which they bring back to the childminder's home to use in their play.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are well prepared for the next steps in their learning. They are developing the skills needed for school when the time comes. Children explore letters and the sounds they represent while reading signs in the botanical gardens. They learn about the world around them as they explore hedgehogs and observe cactus growing in the garden. Children enjoy being creative. They use their imaginations and observe patterns as they make rubbings of a tree bark. Children learn about space and measure while baking cakes and constructing a car track. They develop their early reading skills as they listen well to a favourite story.
