This provision is good
Children build very secure attachments with the kind and caring childminder, who is very sensitive to their individual needs. This helps ensure children are happy, settled and keen to learn. The childminder is an excellent role model and manages children's behaviour skilfully. For example, she notices when each child behaves well and praises them for kind acts, which helps boost their confidence and supports positive behaviour. A good balance of free play and planned activities meets children's needs and supports their interests effectively. For example, children regularly attend community playgroups and local attractions with the childminder, to help enrich their social experiences. All children make good progress from their starting points. The childminder is committed to providing a high-quality service and regularly evaluates and reviews her work. She is keen to listen to parents' and children's ideas, and values
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder misses opportunities to extend children's mathematical skills and understanding further so they learn simple calculations and about three-dimensional shapes. At times, the childminder does not make the best possible use of opportunities to support younger children further as they explore new vocabulary.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and the children in the setting. The inspector looked at children's information, attendance records and development records, and talked to the childminder and children at appropriate times. The inspector spoke to parents and took into account their written views through written testimonials. The inspector discussed the childminder's evaluation, assessment and planning methods, and a range of policies and procedures, including risk assessments. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder has a good knowledge of her responsibility to support children's learning, development and welfare. Safeguarding is effective. She knows the signs and symptoms to look out for and the correct procedure to follow if she has child protection concerns. The childminder attends training, meets with other childminders and carries out her own research to develop and extend her knowledge of current developments in practice. As a result she has built a secure play area in the garden to encourage children's social and physical development outdoors. The childminder encourages two-way communication with parents and other settings that children attend, to share information about their learning. Parents are very complimentary about the childminder's practice.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder monitors children's development regularly and uses this information effectively to identify and address any gaps in learning. Teaching is strong. For example, the childminder skilfully captures children's engagement in activities through demonstrating and asking questions to make children think. For instance, children show delight as they manoeuvre a balloon down the staircase and guess how long it will take to hit the floor. Children enjoy solving problems together as they use resources and their imaginations to make a tent big enough for two. This helps to support children's creativity and communication skills. Children develop a positive awareness of their similarities and people's differences, for example, through the childminder's good use of resources, books and displays.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder makes good use of everyday opportunities to help support children's independence. For example, she encourages them to learn how to use a knife as they prepare bananas and grapes for snack. The childminder supports children's awareness of healthy lifestyles very effectively. For example, she teaches many positive strategies to prevent germs from spreading, such as washing their hands after stroking a puppy and before they touch food at a picnic. Children understand the importance of daily exercise to help keep them healthy and enjoy the lively action rhymes, songs and physical activities the childminder plans each day.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are prepared well for the next stage in their learning and their move to playgroup and school. For example, during everyday play activities, children learn how to count, and use colour and number language in the correct way. Older children become increasingly skilled at independently dressing themselves, such as fastening zips and buttons, and going to the toilet on their own. Children learn to listen to instructions, respect other people and make their needs known politely, using good manners.
