This provision is good
The childminder provides a well-organised and well-resourced environment. Children are happy and well settled in the childminder's care. They form strong attachments with the childminder and her family. The childminder has built good relationships with the children's parents. They work well to apply a shared approach to learning. For example, parents contribute to their children's assessments and work closely with the childminder to meet their children's changing needs. The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn. She makes regular assessments of children's progress to monitor their development effectively. All children make good progress from their starting points. Children behave well. They share the resources and are kind to one another. Older children show care and often praise the younger children for their achievements. The childminder supports successfully children's interest in letters and the sounds that

they represent. For example, young children sound out letters that they recognise excitedly and the childminder praises them for their achievements.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
At times, the childminder misses opportunities to help children to develop their finer physical skills, to support them with their early writing development.

make the most of opportunities that arise to support children's developing physical skills, in particular the finer movements needed for developing early writing.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children. The inspector sampled a range of documentation and children's records. The inspector read written statements from parents and took their views into account. The inspector had discussions with the childminder and children during the inspection. The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the procedures to follow to report concerns about children's welfare. She is keen to improve and uses self-evaluation well. She constantly reviews her practice to make changes that benefit the children and their families. For example, she has recently developed her outdoor space to make the area more accessible for children. She is aware of the need to keep her knowledge and skills up to date and relevant, and uses available resources to do this. She works well with other local professionals and carries out research to further her understanding and to develop her skills. For instance, the childminder has developed the methods that she uses to assess and share children's progress after reflecting on parents' involvement.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has high expectations of what the children can do. She monitors successfully the progress that children make in their learning to plan for their next steps. The childminder uses her skills and experience well to provide children with activities that are interesting and challenging. For example, young children enjoy taking on the challenge of naming animals and matching numbers as they play together in a group. The childminder supports children's language well. For instance, she uses children's interest in books to model language and to ask questions to engage them in conversation. Children are imaginative and they become absorbed in books. For example, they take part in storytelling excitedly and enjoy talking about the characters in the book.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides opportunities for children to explore and meet people from backgrounds different to their own. For example, they go on outings in their community and attend different groups. The childminder supports children to understand risk, to keep themselves safe. For instance, she talks about hazards in the environment, helping children to understand why rules are in place to keep them safe. The childminder promotes healthy lifestyles effectively. For example, she provides healthy food and teaches children the importance of drinking water throughout the day. Children become independent and confident at making their own choices, such as through accessing toys and resources.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children acquire the skills that will support them with the next stage of their learning and the eventual move on to school. For example, they follow instructions well and develop good levels of concentration. All children gain a good mathematical awareness. Young children enjoy counting as they play and older children are able to recognise numbers and match them to quantities.
