This provision is good

 Children develop strong, caring relationships with the childminder and his co- childminders. This helps to support children's growing confidence and self-esteem.  The childminder builds on his knowledge and skills. For example, through his own research and training as well as advice and guidance from other professionals. This has a positive effect on the outcomes for children.  The childminder works well with his co-childminders. They observe one another's practice to help identify strengths and areas for improvement in their teaching.  The childminder has a secure understanding of children's learning needs. He observes them at play and uses his findings to identify what they need to learn next. He supports children to continually make good progress in their learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently help young children to develop their early writing skills further.  The childminder does not share sufficient information with other settings that children attend, to help provide a consistent approach to children's care, learning and development.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance opportunities for children to practise their early writing skills  extend information sharing with other early years settings that children also attend, to support continuity of learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder, co-childminder and children at suitable times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including the childminder's self- evaluation and evidence of suitability.  The inspector observed children at play.  The inspector looked at children's learning and development records.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and his co-childminders take effective action to maintain children's safety at all times, indoors and outdoors. Clear and appropriate procedures are in place to report any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder ensures all adults working with children are up to date with child protection procedures and safeguarding training. They are confident in recognising the signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk. Partnerships with parents are secure and successfully support a good two-way flow of information to facilitate continuity of care. This also successfully encourages parents to continue their child's learning at home. The childminder reflects on his own practice and identifies areas for improvement. This contributes to his strong capacity for continuous improvement.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder regularly observes children at play. He compares children's achievements to levels of development that are typical for their age range. This helps him to identify any areas of learning where children may need extra help. It also helps him to plan activities to support them to move on to their next steps in learning. The childminder communicates well with children. For example, he listens carefully to children and repeats their attempts at words and sentences back to them, using correct grammar and pronunciation. Children enjoy joining in with songs they know well and listening to their favourite stories.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children learn to mix with others and find out about the world around them. For example, they enjoy regular outings to playgroups, parks and farms. Children benefit from frequent play outdoors in the fresh air. They find out about the natural environment, for example, as they talk about the weather and notice the changing seasons. The childminder knows the children in his care well. Regular communication with parents helps him to meet children's individual needs very well, including their health and dietary requirements.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and motivated to learn and they make good progress in all areas of learning. Children cooperate well during routines and follow instructions, paying close attention to the childminder. They learn new skills, such putting on their own outdoor clothing and confidently ask for help when required. Children learn good social skills, behave well and learn to share and take turns with popular resources. For example, knowing it is kind to wait for their turn to use the wheeled toys. They are well prepared for moving on to nursery or school.
