p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder is passionate and committed to her work with children. She talks to children in a calm and respectful manner which helps them feel safe and settle well.  Young children become confident communicators. They use their language skills well to involve others in their play. For example, children tell the childminder what they are playing and involve her in their imaginative games.  The quality of teaching is good. The childminder understands how children learn and provide interesting and engaging activities to help children develop. As a result, children make good progress.  Children enjoy making use of the well-resourced and effectively planned play opportunities indoors and outside.  The childminder carries out daily risk assessments of all areas, resources and equipment, and supervises children well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently share information with other settings that children attend, to provide a more shared approach to learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop partnerships with other settings that children attend, to share learning and provide consistency, to support their development further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector reviewed the areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector observed play and learning activities inside and outside and observed the quality of interactions between adults and children.  The inspector and the childminder discussed some of the activities provided and how these encourage children’s learning.  The inspector sampled documentation, including evidence of suitability checks, children’s progress and policies.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has attended training in child protection and fully understands the procedures to follow should she have concerns about a child’s welfare. The childminder recognises the benefits of professional development. She works hard to keep her skills relevant and attends regular training to keep her knowledge up to date. For example, she attended a training course to support children’s reading skills and has introduced the use of story sacks. Systems to share information with other settings that the children may attend are not yet fully embedded in practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children closely as they play so that she continues to have an accurate understanding of their abilities. She plans activities which build successfully on children’s existing skills. The childminder supports children’s language and communication. For example, she constantly talks to the children as they play, helping them make links between what they see and what they are doing. Children enjoy being active and developing their physical skills. For example, they practise their balancing skills in the garden. Children have good opportunities to develop their interest in technology. For instance, they use cameras to take photos of the natural environment.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is devoted to the children she looks after and forms very close relationships with them. Parents speak highly of the childminder and her sensitivity in caring for each child and the way she promotes children emotional wellbeing. For example, using the ‘Jar of happiness’ for older children. Regular and meaningful praise encourages children to feel good about themselves and they are encouraged to ‘have a go’ at activities. For example, children become increasingly independent as they learn to put on their own shoes. Children benefit from regular trips to the park, library and playgroups. This helps children develop their social skills and learn about the community and environment around them. The childminder helps children to develop healthy lifestyles. For example, she encourages them to drink water and eat healthy food.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and curious, and show a keen interest in learning. They experience a varied and interesting range of opportunities to develop their literacy and mathematical skills. For example, the childminder encourages them to count and use mathematical language in their play. They use words such as 'more' and 'how many?' as they play with number cards. Children, including those with special needs or disabilities are actively gaining the skills and knowledge they need for the next stage of their learning.
