This provision is good

 The childminder has significantly improved the quality of the service since her last inspection, including through developing how she maintains records.  Children are given time to reflect, describe and share their ideas, and practise their writing skills.  The childminder plans and provides children with individual learning opportunities and appropriate levels of challenge. This helps them to make progress and enjoy their learning.  The childminder supports her assistants well. Together they provide consistent support to children and work in partnership with parents and carers, and other providers.  The childminder supports children's emotional security effectively. She has a warm approach towards the children in her care. The children especially value the childminder getting involved in their play. Together, they laugh and have fun.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not support younger children to develop their early impulse to explore consistently.  At times, the childminder does not take enough opportunities to support children in linking sounds to letters.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 support younger children more consistently to allow them to fully explore the resources and activities available  provide more consistent opportunities to support older children in linking sounds to letters.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at documentation relating to the suitability of persons who live and work on the premises.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector observed and evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times.  The inspector read written feedback from parents and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder ensures that she remains fully aware of her local authority's safeguarding procedures and any changes in legislation. The childminder supports her assistants' professional development and they keep their knowledge up to date. The childminder is confident about her responsibilities in the event of there being a concern about a child in her care. She effectively monitors children's individual progress and shares her knowledge with their parents. The childminder works in partnership with other providers, supporting children's care and learning effectively when they attend two settings. Parents share positive views about the childminder’s service. They especially appreciate the support she provides and state their children adore her.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children as they play and makes accurate assessments about what they know and can do. She effectively uses this information to inform her planning. The childminder supports children's communication and language development well. She encourages them to talk to her about what they are doing as they lead their learning. The childminder praises children for using new, less-familiar words appropriately, such as 'zig- zag'. Children have opportunities to use mathematical language. They learn the names of shapes they make with play dough and count how many objects they have made. The childminder extends children's mathematical knowledge and understanding, using vocabulary to describe the differences in size, such as 'small', 'medium' and 'big'.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is warm and attentive to young children's needs. She knows exactly when they are tired and provides warmth and comfort to help them go to sleep. Children's behaviour is good. They are beginning to understand the childminder's expectations of them in her home. She gives them warning when an activity is about to end, so they can get ready for pre-school. Children are beginning to learn about keeping themselves safe in the community, near roads and in play areas. They are learning about leading a healthy lifestyle. The childminder reminds them about the importance of eating foods that are good for their bodies and give them energy.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are developing good skills in readiness for the next stage in their lives, such as the move on to school. Children make relationships with children of a similar age and other adults at local groups they attend with the childminder. Children grow in confidence and self-esteem through the childminder’s positive praise. Children confidently use writing implements and a range of tools to build their physical skills.
