This provision is good
The childminder competently observes and assesses children's progress. She provides a wide range of challenging activities and helps children make good progress in their learning from their starting points. Strong partnerships with parents and schoolteachers enable the childminder to provide continuity of care and education for children. She builds successfully on what children are learning at school. The childminder enhances children's understanding of how to stay safe. For example, she plans activities that increase children's awareness of what to do in an emergency. The childminder successfully involves parents and children in the evaluation of her setting. She makes good use of their suggestions to improve children's experiences, such as providing activities that build on their understanding of time. The childminder shows a strong commitment to improving her knowledge and skills. For instance, since she registered she has completed an extensive amount of training

and made positive improvements to practice that have benefited children. This has included enhancing her skills in helping children manage their feelings in an acceptable way.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not consistently make the most of opportunities for children to explore, investigate and enhance their understanding of the natural world. The childminder does not consistently build on children's already strong awareness of positive differences between themselves and others.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector discussed childcare practice with the childminder. The inspector sampled relevant documentation. The inspector observed children's activities indoors and in the garden. The inspector took account of the views of parents and children. The inspector looked at the childminder's development plans and discussed them with her.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder implements thorough procedures that help ensure her assistant is suitable to work with children. She makes sure they have a good understanding of their role and responsibilities. The childminder carefully monitors, coaches and supports her assistant. For example, she carries out appraisals and identifies any training needs. The childminder and her assistant keep their safeguarding training up to date. The childminder monitors children's progress competently and identifies any emerging gaps in their learning or in her planning. She successfully narrows the gaps and meets children's needs.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides a wide range of stimulating activities that is carefully tailored to meet children's individual interests and needs. She gives children plenty of choices and encourages them to initiate and develop their play. For example, older children created a guessing game themselves. They took it in turns to feel and describe what was inside a box. The childminder also plans stimulating learning activities, such as making fake snow. Children were fascinated by the process and enjoyed exploring the texture of the snow. The childminder extends children's vocabulary, for instance, by introducing words such as 'expanding'. She builds effectively on their already strong communication skills. For example, the childminder skilfully asks questions that encourage children to share their experiences and ideas.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder creates a relaxed and homely environment where children settle quickly and make good friends. Older children arrive happily from school and make themselves at home. The mix of ages works successfully and children play well together. They readily join in activities with their friends and share resources. The childminder actively encourages children to listen to each other and to show good manners. She builds on their understanding of healthy lifestyles effectively. For example, the childminder provides children with healthy snacks and home-cooked meals that they help prepare.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children develop well in the skills they need for their future learning. They enjoy learning and are well motivated. Children are confident, secure and happy. They are confident speakers and happily engage in conversation with adults. Children are independent and manage their personal care needs well. They have good social skills and show care for others. Children help their friends, for example, by pouring drinks out for them and finding additional resources so everyone can have a go. They enjoy taking on responsibilities and understand rules in the setting, such as no running indoors.
