This provision is good

 Children are well behaved for their ages. Staff have clear routines in place and children rise to the expectations of staff. Children are frequently praised for their efforts.  Self-evaluation is effective in identifying how the nursery can continue to improve. The manager seeks feedback from parents and staff to help identify where changes can be made.  Partnerships with parents are well established. Parents speak very highly about the care and education that their children receive. They feel well informed and supported about their children's care and learning.  Staff use a good range of teaching skills, such as explaining, questioning and encouragement, which helps each child achieve well.  The manager effectively oversees the professional development of her staff. For instance, she closely monitors staff's practice and ensures that they have access to relevant training to further strengthen their skills and extend their knowledge.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasion, children's next steps in learning are not planned as accurately as possible for their individual learning and development.  At times, planned activities for children do not fully enable them to explore and develop their imagination, as children are sometimes expected to follow a prescribed aim to produce an end product.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the good observation, assessment and planning process further to help ensure children's next steps in learning are accurately targeted for their individual learning and development  develop planned activities for children to enable them to fully explore and develop their own ideas and imagination.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children taking part in a range of activities in all rooms.  The inspector spoke with staff and observed their teaching.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector spoke to parents and children to take account of their views.  The inspector sampled a wide range of documentation, including staff's suitability checks, children's development records and attendance registers.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Thorough induction procedures contribute to the safe recruitment of staff. Managers ensure that staff have a secure, up-to-date understanding of safeguarding procedures. Staff know precisely what to do if they are concerned about the welfare of a child or the conduct of an adult. All staff are aware of the wider issues of safeguarding. They have received recent training to ensure they are aware of their duty to prevent children from being drawn into situations that put them at risk of harm. There are good links with other professionals and children's future schools. Children are well prepared for their moves between rooms and for school. The manager and staff use monitoring of individual children and groups of children effectively to identify and close gaps and, where necessary, involve external agencies.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Throughout the nursery, staff involve children with skill at story times. Younger children show fascination in pictures and older children take on the part of characters in their story. Staff use pictures and props to encourage children to listen during story sessions. For example, children count from one to eight as they count the candles on a candelabra and join in with enjoyable games and actions. All children's communication and language development is promoted effectively. Practitioners get down to the children's level to encourage eye contact and to show that they value children's ideas. Staff prepare some challenging activities for the children. For instance, older children show curiosity and fascination as they pick up a range of metal objects with magnets. They compare the weights and discuss who has the most objects 'stuck' to their magnet. Children develop very good hand-to-eye coordination. They skilfully screw nuts onto large bolts and

purposefully stick small objects to pictures.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff provide a broad range of physical activities. For example, children use the garden throughout the day, all year round. Practitioners use effective methods to enable children to respect each other, be proud of their culture and to learn about communities beyond their immediate experiences. Children behave very well and staff are good role models for them. For example, they encourage children to share, take turns and develop independent self-care skills. Toddlers are happy and content as staff know and meet their individual needs very well, such as at nappy change and sleep times.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and motivated learners. They are learning the key skills they need for their future learning and in readiness for school. Children participate enthusiastically in activities and maintain good levels of concentration during play and group activities, such as singing and story time. Children learn about sounds and the letters they represent. They confidently identify letters on a spinning toy and copy them onto stickers that they proudly wear and share with their friends and parents.
