This provision is good

 The childminder develops warm, strong relationships with children, so they feel secure and safe in her care.  Partnerships with other providers are effective. The childminder works well with other professionals, seeking and sharing appropriate information to meet children's specific needs.  The childminder knows individual children well and plans activities to build on their abilities and interests. Children make good progress from their starting points.  Partnerships with parents are effective. They share information about family events and the childminder is aware of how these can affect children's behaviour and progress, enabling her to support them well.  The childminder uses self-evaluation well to monitor her practice and identify areas to improve to provide good outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder's lack of confidence in her mathematical knowledge affects her enthusiasm and success to promote and deliver this area of learning to the children.  The childminder has a limited range of resources available to enable her to encourage discussions with children about different cultures, lifestyles or disabilities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop knowledge and skills in teaching early mathematics  improve the range of resources available to help increase children's awareness of difference and diversity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the childminder's home, including the garden and equipment, and observed the childminder with children.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector talked with the childminder at appropriate times.  The inspector took account of written parental feedback provided by the childminder.  The inspector sampled childminding documentation, including planning and children's progress records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware of her responsibility to meet statutory requirements. She is alert to vulnerable children and families, and knowledgeable about the procedures to follow to safeguard their welfare. The childminder strives to develop and improve her practice. She monitors this well, and accesses training and shares ideas with other providers. This has helped her to increase her focus on enabling children to express their feelings. She has improved the environment to make resources more accessible to young children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder carefully assesses children's level of development and monitors their rates of progress well. She takes effective steps to maintain their good progress and provides interesting activities to promote children's learning. For example, the childminder models how to do things. She involves young children in creating things. For instance, drawing around their hands to create cardboard reindeer antlers. She helps children to use scissors and gives very clear explanations of how to do this safely. Children enjoy selecting from the range of decorations that the childminder provides. The childminder skilfully tests and reinforces children's knowledge of shapes and colours as she questions them about the resources they are using.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and confident in the childminder's home. They are comfortable in the environment and happily choose toys and activities. Children are familiar with the childminder's expectations. They are polite and behave well. The childminder encourages children to consider the effects of their behaviour on others. She ensures that they follow good health and hygiene practices. For example, she provides nutritious snacks and children benefit from regular energetic outdoor play. The childminder takes children out on regular outings, where they learn about their environment and benefit from having space to enjoy energetic play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop strong communication, independence, creative and physical skills. They enjoy craft activities, where they choose and discuss the materials they use and enthusiastically talk about their experiences. They listen attentively as the childminder explains what to do. Children show persistence as they master new skills. These attitudes and skills help prepare them well for their future learning.
