This provision is good

 The childminder provides a welcoming, homely learning environment where children are relaxed and happy.  Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder actively involves them in their child's learning. For example, she uses an effective system to keep parents updated about their child's good development progress.  The childminder successfully promotes children's good health. They benefit from nutritious and balanced meals and snacks, and experience fresh air and exercise during outdoor activities.  The childminder is a good role model for children. She helps them learn to share, and respect and consider others' needs.  The childminder reviews her provision effectively to help improve her practice. She identifies her strengths and the areas she wants to develop further.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always organise activities and present learning experiences effectively, to fully encourage children to make independent choices.  The childminder does not make full use of all opportunities to build on children's early mathematical knowledge.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build further on opportunities for children to make confident, independent choices about their play  develop further opportunities to extend children's early mathematical skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed a variety of activities in the main playroom and looked at other areas used for childminding, including outside.  The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector asked the childminder questions about her practice, at appropriate times, throughout the inspection.  The childminder looked at children's assessment records and other documentation.  The inspector took account of parents' written views on the quality of the provision.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of her responsibilities to record and report concerns about children's welfare, should these arise. She carries out risk assessments regularly to help ensure the environments children use are safe. The childminder keeps herself informed of developments in childcare practices, such as through meeting other childcarers. She has established effective communication with other professionals who share the care of the children she minds, such as at the local pre- school. This helps provide consistency in children's care and learning. The childminder reviews children's ongoing progress and plans well for children's needs and next steps in development, taking their learning forward effectively. The childminder routinely seeks the views of parents and their comments are consistently positive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has created a well-resourced, designated playroom for children to use. She plans experiences at her home and in her local community. For example, children enjoy trips on buses and trains where the childminder can interact with them, talking about what they can see. Indoors, children like to be active and creative. Painting, using different tools, is very popular and they use vegetables, such as corn on the cob for rolling, to create patterns on the paper. Even the youngest children enjoy getting 'messy', using their fingers and hands to make marks. They thoroughly enjoy mixing paints to make new colours. The childminder interacts well with the children. She talks to them about what they are doing. At story time, children love to find the figures associated with the story and chat about what is going on in the pictures. The youngest children's early communication skills are given special attention.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder builds strong attachments with children. She is nurturing and cares for them consistently well. This support their well-being and helps them feel safe and secure. The childminder provides praise and encouragement to help children progress in their emotional development. Children follow effective hygiene routines and learn about keeping themselves safe. Children enjoy learning about people in the wider world, such as through visits to toddler groups in the area.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are inquisitive learners. They are very interested in the world around them and enjoy exploring their environment. Children enjoy creative play and use their imagination as they practise using their coordination skills. All children make good progress. They are gaining the skills they need for their future learning and starting school.
