This provision is good

 The childminder provides a good selection of age appropriate toys and resources that interest children and motivate them to learn.  The childminder works with her husband, who is also a registered childminder. Together they are a strong team. They have established effective partnerships with parents to support children’s individual needs and promote their learning and development from the very beginning, both at home and in her setting.  The childminder uses her knowledge about each individual child to plan activities that help children move on in their learning and development. She carefully monitors it to ensure all children make good progress.  Children behave well and according to their age expectations. The childminder is a good role model to children and provides them with clear and consistent boundaries. She teaches children to be polite and treat people with care and respect.  The childminder is committed to providing a high quality setting and regularly evaluates

and reviews her work to maintain a good quality provision and to drive further improvements.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to explain to children why eating healthily is important as part of their healthy lifestyles.  At times, the childminder sets too high expectations for younger children, particularly when they sit for activities orientated to help older children get ready for school.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide better opportunities to help children understand the benefits of eating healthily as part of their healthy lifestyles  review the organisation of some group activities to fully meet all children’s learning needs.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder, co-childminder, some children and parents during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documents available, including those relating to the premises and safeguarding.  The inspector observed activities and daily routines.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is fully aware of her responsibilities to protect children. She has a good knowledge and understanding of all safeguarding policies and procedures, and knows what actions to take should she have a concern about a child’s safety or welfare. The childminder regularly updates her knowledge to keep her up to date with any new legislation and to gain new ideas to support children’s learning effectively. She closely monitors children’s progress and quickly identifies any gaps in children’s learning and development, and ensures they are rapidly closing. The childminder has built positive relationships with parents and shares relevant information with them on a regular basis to maintain consistency.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy an interesting range of activities that the childminder plans for them. She skilfully follows children’s ideas and interests and teaches them through play. For example, children enjoy a sticking activity where they decorate Christmas tree decorations. During activities like this, the childminder skilfully introduces new vocabulary, helps children understand that things exist and gain knowledge about various festivals and traditions. She uses good questioning, which also helps children think for themselves.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a very nurturing environment. She uses information gathered from parents to help children settle and successfully adapts their personal care routines. All children are happy, settled and love cuddles with the childminder. The childminder knows when to step back and let children play at their own pace, which helps them gain their own social skills and experience. She consistently praises children to boost their confidence and self-esteem. The childminder teaches children to follow good hygiene routines and provides nutritious meals to maintain their health. She ensures the environment is safe for children.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those who have special educational needs and/or disabilities, make good progress from their starting points and successfully develop the skills needed for their next steps and future life. For example, children have opportunities to learn numbers and letters and recognise their names. Children develop socially, physically and emotionally very well. They learn to be independent from a young age. All children are confident and able to express their needs.
