p.1

This provision is good

 Children behave well. They are happy, self-assured and emotionally secure.  Children explore a stimulating environment, indoors and outdoors, with confidence. They make decisions about what to play with and are enthusiastic and motivated to learn.  Children develop well physically. They enjoy nutritious lunches and snacks and outdoor activities.  Parents and staff work well in partnership, exchanging information about the children to support their care and learning.  Staff know each child well and plan activities to match children's interests and personal experiences. Good teaching supports all children to progress well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The systems for the supervision and the monitoring of staff's practice are newly implemented and not fully embedded.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 refine the performance management and monitoring of staff to identify specific and targeted professional development opportunities for each staff member, to help raise the quality of teaching to an even higher level.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the provider.  The inspector held a meeting with the provider. She looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery.  The inspector spoke to staff, children and parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Staffing levels are maintained at a higher level than the minimum required, indoors and outdoors. Staff assess and manage risks and position themselves well to closely supervise children. They effectively follow a range of policies to keep children safe. Information on safeguarding is displayed around the nursery, and staff confidently discuss processes that they follow to protect children. The provider takes on board the views of staff, children and parents in evaluations of the nursery. She also acts swiftly to meet advice from other agencies on how to improve the quality of the nursery. Most records and documents, including logs of attendance, medicine administration and risk assessments, are well maintained and audited, and help to ensure children are kept safe.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff work together closely to share knowledge gained from their qualifications and training to provide good care and education. They use information from parents and other settings that children attend to identify each child's abilities when they start. Staff plan activities well using children's individual interests and next steps. Learning is active and fun for children. They display high levels of engagement and concentration; for example, when decorating a pirate ship with stickers and transfers. Staff follow children's lead during play and encourage them to think and work things out for themselves. For example, a child says the ship needs a roof to protect the pirates from the sun and is supported to access the materials to make one. Accurate assessment is skilfully used to plan activities at the correct level, to challenge children and drive their learning forward.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff form secure relationships with children. Children learn in a range of ways how healthy eating and exercise support a healthy lifestyle. Outdoors, they grow vegetables, practise climbing on the den ladder and negotiate space on the ride-on toys. Children demonstrate care for others; for example, one child pours water for others at lunchtime. They learn about their community and about personal safety, and enjoy themed activities, including role play about the fire and police services.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop good listening, speaking and social skills. They communicate well with each other, staff and visitors. They learn how to take turns as they play games, such as hiding the ball in the garden for others to find. Children's literacy skills develop well. Staff take every opportunity to encourage children to identify letters and sounds. Children listen attentively to stories read by staff and choose to look at books for pleasure. They choose to draw with pencils on paper and use brushes in water to make marks on the garden den. Children develop good mathematical abilities and practise skills, such as dressing themselves. They are well prepared to make the move on to school.
