This provision is good
The childminder is highly qualified and experienced, and uses the Steiner Waldorf approach to teaching and learning. She successfully helps children to develop their independent ideas, learn through creative play and by imitating adults. Children take part in a varied range of stimulating daily activities indoors and outdoors, that help them to make good progress. The childminder places a high priority on children's well-being. She is an extremely good role model for children. She is very kind, calm and patient in her approach, promoting a peaceful environment where children thrive and flourish. The childminder places a high priority on helping children to learn how to manage risks and stay safe while enjoying the thrill of challenging and extending their physical skills. The childminder works very closely with parents to identify and meet children's individual needs, particularly when children first attend her setting.
p.1
This provision is good
The childminder is a reflective practitioner. She uses self-evaluation and attends a variety of training events to continually improve her practice and outcomes for children.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not explore ways to consistently integrate mathematical concepts, such as counting into children's daily experiences, so that children have rich opportunities to imitate and learn about number.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this had on children's learning. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector interacted with children during the inspection. The inspector took into account the views of parents through written feedback provided by the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of her role and responsibilities with regard to child protection. She knows the potential signs and symptoms of abuse, including the procedures she must follow if she has concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder takes all necessary steps to keep children safe and secure as they play, rest and explore the outdoors. The childminder seeks and responds to the views of children and parents. She works with parents to establish children's starting points, identify next steps in learning and monitor progress. The childminder makes good use of links with other providers and professionals to extend her knowledge and skills.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder is a skilled practitioner. She models listening and vocabulary well and is skilled in encouraging children to use speech to communicate. She teaches children a wide variety of traditional songs and rhymes, and successfully encourages them to enjoy looking at books and listening to stories. The childminder enables children to initiate and lead their own play and follow their interests. She observes children at play and when invited by children to join them, she skilfully supports children to sustain their interest. Children solve simple problems of space and measure, as they encounter them in play, and they persist in achieving their goals. The childminder plans activities, such as bread making and conker threading where children learn to imitate the childminder and learn new skills. The childminder provides children with an array of experiences outdoors that help them to learn about their wider community and the natural world.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children develop strong attachments to the childminder. They are friendly to visitors and join in with each other's play. For example, all children get aboard the pretend train that has been made by them using wooden building bricks. Children enjoy being independent. They show pride in their achievements and they are confident in their abilities to do things for themselves, such as hanging the dustpan and brush up. Children express their needs and enjoy taking an active role in their care routines, such as washing their hands before mealtime. They make choices about the food they eat and develop healthy tastes and appetites.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are well prepared for their next steps in learning and for their eventual move on to school, when the time comes. Children are motivated and inquisitive learners who confidently initiate their own imaginative play. Some children make higher than expected progress in some of their physical skills. They climb, balance and negotiate space on larger outdoor equipment. They handle and purposefully manipulate a range of toys, tools and resources. Children are confident communicators. They ask questions and recall past experiences. They enjoy making sounds with musical instruments and singing a variety of rhymes and songs.
