This provision is good

 The childminder is enthusiastic and keen to develop her provision. She attends training and keeps her knowledge up to date. She evaluates her practice and identifies areas for improvement, for instance, the outdoor area.  Effective partnership working with parents and other settings that children attend ensures that children receive consistent care and learning from the start.  The childminder is a good role model for children. She explains and demonstrates how to do things to develop children's understanding and skills.  Children develop strong attachments with the childminder, who is very caring and responsive to their needs. They settle quickly and demonstrate that they feel happy, safe and secure.  Children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder provides a comfortable and caring environment. Children access a wide range of toys independently that challenges and motivates them to learn.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not encourage children to carry out tasks to extend their independence consistently.  The childminder does not fully help children to understand that good practices with regard to their hygiene contribute to their good health.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to carry out more tasks independently, in readiness for school  build on the already good opportunities that help children to learn more about how good hygiene practices contribute to their good health.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with children during the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a very good understanding of child protection issues. She knows exactly how to act should she have any concerns regarding a child's welfare. She has appropriate systems to record accidents and medication that she has administered. The childminder conducts robust risk assessments to monitor the suitability of the premises and to identify potential hazards on outings. The childminder ensures her assistant understands the policies and procedures and their paediatric first-aid qualification is kept up to date. The premises are secure and safety is given high priority. This helps to protect children from harm. Regular observations and assessment help the childminder to check children's progress. She uses this information effectively to address any gaps in their learning and development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy their time with the childminder and eagerly engage her in their play. The childminder encourages older children to build on their mathematical skills. For example, children make shapes with dough, and she encourages them to talk about size and count how many they have made. Children's communication and language skills are successfully promoted. The childminder engages children in discussions as they play, asks effective questions and encourages them to think for themselves. As they read stories, the childminder demonstrates how to be respectful and take care of books. This helps to support children's early literacy skills well.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder praises children often. This helps to raise their self-esteem and motivates them to keep trying. The childminder sets clear expectations for behaviour. Children's behaviour is very good. They follow rules and behaviour boundaries as they play. They share, take turns and use very good manners. Children are happy and confident. They develop important social and physical skills. For example, children have daily outings to local parks and playgroups. The childminder maintains regular communication with parents to ensure children's individual care routines are supported effectively.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and motivated individuals. They move around freely and safely, and gain a sense of belonging. For example, they are delighted to see their images on photographs. Children try hard and persistently attempt to achieve their goals. They are making good progress within the typical range of development for their age. Children acquire the skills and attitudes needed for their future learning and eventual move to school.
