This provision is good

 The childminder builds positive working partnerships with teachers from the local school. She relays messages to parents, which helps to provide children with continuity in their care and development.  The childminder supports children's communication and language skills well. She talks with children as they play and gives them the time they need to think and respond to the things she says.  The childminder monitors children's achievements well to further support their good progress and complement their learning in school.  Children show how they have formed warm emotional attachments with the childminder and feel safe in her care. They explore their environment with ease and make independent choices as they organise their self-chosen play.  The childminder manages behaviour in a positive way. She helps children to learn that some conduct is unacceptable and she involves children in finding solutions to problems

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder has positive interactions with children, professional development does not precisely focus on raising this practice to an outstanding level.  Although the childminder evaluates her provision well, she does not consistently seek the views of parents in her self-evaluation to help secure continuous improvements that benefit children.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 focus professional development more precisely to raise the quality of interactions to an even higher level  strengthen the involvement of parents in the self-evaluation process to drive continual improvement further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the main playroom.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows what to do in the event of an allegation against her or other household members. She has a good understanding of the possible signs and symptoms of abuse. The childminder is aware of current legislation, such as the 'Prevent' duty guidance, and is able to recognise the indicators that children are at risk of exposure to extreme ideas about right and wrong. She knows the importance of acting promptly on any concerns she may have about a child's welfare. The childminder is vigilant about children's safety and carries out risk assessments of her home and when taking children on outings. This helps to minimise any possible hazards and risks to children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers good information about children's likes and dislikes, which helps to ensure that they settle quickly in her care. She has a good understanding of how children learn and interacts positively with them. Children are encouraged to make choices about what they would like to play with and the childminder takes account of their interests. Children enhance their mathematical skills. For example, they separate white and brown wooden circles, put them in a line and count the total number of items in the two groups. Children name colours correctly and use language to describe shape, such as a round cheese. They confidently connect the ramp to the pretend garage, showing how they can fit shapes into spaces. Children enjoy talking with the childminder about their special friends. They show how they have settled well into the wider social environment of school and are confident at making relationships with their peers. Children enjoy looking

at books and identify different images and characters. The childminder pauses when reading stories and singing songs to encourage children to finish sentences. She promotes children's literacy development well.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children have many opportunities to learn about food that is good for them and how to lead a healthy lifestyle. They enjoy nutritious packed lunches from home and visit local shops to buy fruit and vegetables. Children enjoy physical exercise and being active. They visit the nearby park and play on larger apparatus. Children learn to jump off an object and land appropriately. They carefully mount stairs and climb equipment using alternate feet. The childminder explains to children why safety is important when moving and she has sensible rules for them to follow. Children learn to do things for themselves, such as putting on and taking off their coat and shoes. They manage their own personal care needs well and learn good hygiene practice through their everyday routines.
