Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Although significant improvement has been made since the last inspection, staff supervision and performance management procedures need further development. The impact of teaching on children’s learning and development is not currently evaluated.  Appropriate procedures are in place for recording accidents or injuries to children. However, the procedure for recording existing injuries that children arrive with is not rigorous, as not all relevant information is obtained or recorded.  Children receive some healthy meals and snacks throughout the week. However, the menu could be further improved to ensure that children receive healthy, balanced and nutritious snacks and meals on a daily basis.  There is no procedure in place for the provider to effectively evaluate the provision in order to identify areas for future improvement.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are confident, settled and happy at the nursery and enjoy good relationships with peers.  The key person system works well and children form strong bonds with their carers. Staff know the children well, including what each child is interested in.  Staff work well as a team and are united in their aim to continue to improve the provision further.  Parents are very positive about the nursery and comment that a strength of the provision is that their children receive lots of one-to-one attention from staff.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend the staff supervision and performance management procedures to include the impact of teaching, on children’s learning and development  improve the procedure for recording accidents or injuries to ensure that all relevant information regarding existing injuries is obtained and recorded  continue to develop the menu to ensure that children receive healthy, balanced and nutritious snacks and meals on a daily basis  implement a procedure of self-evaluation to effectively identify areas for development at the earliest opportunity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector carried out a joint observation of an activity with the manager.  The inspector held discussions with the manager, staff and children.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as a selection of policy and procedure records and evidence of children’s learning and development.  The inspector spoke to some parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. However, the procedure for recording existing injuries to children needs to be further improved to ensure that all relevant information is obtained and recorded. Recruitment and vetting procedures are thorough and comply with statutory requirements. The manager and staff work well together as a strong team. They aspire to continually improve the provision. As a result, significant improvement has been made since the last inspection. Appropriate staff supervision procedures are in place. However, these do not currently include the assessment or monitoring of teaching. Consequently, improvements to teaching practice are not readily identified or addressed. Leaders and managers do not routinely evaluate the effectiveness of their provision. This means they are not able to independently identify areas for improvement at the earliest opportunity. Improvements made since the last inspection

have been around areas identified by Ofsted and the local authority.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Staff demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of what all the children know and can do. They are aware of children's interests and plan some appropriate activities around those. However, activities are not always challenging enough to stretch children's imagination and help them to make more rapid progress in their learning and development. For example, a different coloured water mixing activity did not challenge children sufficiently. This is because staff are not using what they know about children to best effect when planning. As a result, not all learning outcomes were achieved. Children's learning and language are promoted well through other activities, such as story telling sessions. Children are encouraged to talk about their family, home experiences and a recent visit to a farm. Parents are kept well informed of their child's development and progress and record their views and comments in their child's learning file.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children enjoy their time at the nursery. They are happy and settled and form good relationships with peers and staff. They receive lots of attention from staff, sometimes on a one-to-one basis. This helps to promote children's confidence, sense of belonging and their social skills. Children are well behaved. Meal times are relaxed and sociable events and children demonstrate good manners and independence skills. They learn about being healthy, and brush their teeth at nursery. However, on some days across the week the menu is not as healthy, balanced and nutritious as on other days. Therefore, children attending on a part time basis may not receive a varied diet at the nursery. Staff provide good emotional support to prepare children for transitions to other settings and to school.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Outcomes for children are improving but are not yet good. They are making steady progress in relation to their starting points. However, further improvements are required to support children to make more rapid progress in their learning and development. Appropriate assessments indicate that children are making steady progress in all areas of learning. Strong relationships are a particular strength within the nursery.
