This provision is good

 The childminder ensures that children are kept safe and protected from harm. A good range of policies and procedures supports her daily practice in maintaining a safe environment.  The childminder provides a welcoming environment for children to learn and play in. The home is very well resourced and toys are easily accessible to help promote independence.  Children show close attachments with the nurturing childminder. Her sensitivity, calmness and ability to support and guide children, help them to develop self- confidence and a strong sense of belonging.  The childminder is enthusiastic and keen to develop her provision. She attends training and keeps her knowledge up to date. This has a positive impact on children's learning and development.  The childminder works well with parents. There is a good two-way flow of information, helping to create continuity in children's care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not make full use of opportunities to extend younger children's counting skills further as they play.  The methods to involve other settings in sharing information about children's learning are not as successful as possible.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities to enhance younger children's counting skills even further  encourage other settings, where children also attend, to share more information which contributes towards developing a consistent approach to children's learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children during the inspection.  The inspector held a meeting with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents, provided through written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of how to protect children's welfare. She understands the procedures to follow if she has a concern for a child's safety. She keeps accurate records of children's attendance. Parents share positive views about the provision. They value the homely environment and are delighted with the progress their children make. The childminder monitors the individual development of children to help them make good progress and close any gaps in their learning. The childminder has good connections with other childminders. She discusses recent changes in early years settings, exchanges ideas and offers support to others.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a very good range of age-appropriate resources, which children are able to access independently. This motivates them to explore and learn. Children enjoy their time with the childminder and eagerly engage her in their play. At times, children demonstrate exceptional levels of concentration. For example, as they explore using brushes and water, delighting in the marks they make. The childminder places a strong emphasis on developing children's communication and language skills. She uses a variety of strategies, including using familiar stories, enabling children to join in and practise their skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and confident. The childminder knows the children's needs, likes and dislikes, which helps her to support children effectively at every stage of their development. Their emotional well-being is being supported very well. Children experience regular trips and outings, such as to the local playgroups and parks. These promote children's physical and social skills and help them to learn more about the local community and the wider world. The childminder is a highly positive role model who sensitively encourages children to share and to be tolerant of each other. She sets clear expectations for behaviour and supports the children to achieve these.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are making good progress from their starting points and are working within the typical range of development for their age. They are self-assured in new social situations. For example, they are happy to show their toys to visitors. Children develop inquisitive minds. They lead their own learning, testing out ideas and theories as they play. Children learn routines and habits that promote good hygiene. They learn to use good manners and join in with shared tasks. Children are gaining the key skills needed for their future learning and for their eventual move on to school.
