This provision is good
Overall, the childminder provides very engaging learning environments indoors and outdoors. Children have independent access to a wide range of exciting and stimulating resources. This helps them to make good progress across all areas of their learning. Children form secure bonds with the childminder and show they feel safe in her care. She knows them well and ensures their individual care needs are met. This has a positive impact on their emotional well-being. The childminder is a good role model for children. She is sensitive and caring. Her expectations of children's behaviour are clear and consistent. Children behave well and learn to be kind to each other. The childminder keeps parents regularly informed about their children's progress. This helps parents to know what their child is working on and how to support their learning at home.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder has not implemented highly successful ways to engage children in her self-evaluation to help her identify further areas for improvement. The childminder does not provide sufficient child-led activities so that children have more of an opportunity to follow their own interests and lead their own play and learning.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge of safeguarding up to date. She attends regular training, helping her to understand current legislation. She has clear procedures in place to follow should she be concerned about the welfare of any child. The childminder supervises children at all times and undertakes risk assessments to minimise hazards in her home. The childminder involves parents in initial assessments of their child's learning and development. This gives her a firm foundation from which to continually monitor children's development. It also helps her to recognise any gaps in children's learning so that measures can be taken to address them.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Overall, the childminder provides interesting activities for children. For example, children enjoy the sensory experience of playing in some jelly with toy dinosaurs. The childminder helps young children to acquire good language skills. For instance, she speaks clearly and repeats words back to them to help their pronunciation. She also introduces new expressive words into children's vocabulary, such as 'squelchy'. The childminder is keen to teach children about the world around them. In the garden, they listen for and identify when an aeroplane flies past and children let her know when they hear a bird. On walks in the local environment, they collect objects, such as conkers and pine cones. The childminder uses these successfully in children's play. For example, they talk about what they feel like and start to count them in the correct order to see how many they have.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder supports children's physical and emotional needs well. She skilfully encourages them to become independent. For example, children become confident in taking off their own coats and shoes. The childminder provides healthy snacks and meals that take into account children's preferences. Children learn about the different foods on offer and from a young age, they are encouraged to help in the preparation. For example, they help to cut up a banana. Children have regular opportunities for physical exercise in the garden. They enjoy playing with water and learn how to negotiate the slide with ease. The childminder encourages their early writing skills. For example, they make marks on the floor with chalks.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are well prepared for the next stage in their learning. They enjoy playing and learning and are developing key skills in readiness for the eventual move on to nursery and school. They concentrate well when activities interest them. For example, they enjoy making play dough and they learn how to roll it out and use cutters. Their early reading skills are developed well. They enjoy looking at books on their own or with the childminder.
