Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Good 2

Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Good 2

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder had not informed Ofsted that she had employed an assistant so that it could carry out all the suitability checks. The assistant has been working with the childminder for over a year. However, the childminder did initiate this process following the inspection notification call.  The childminder does not continue to check her assistants' ongoing suitability. For example, she does not inform her assistants of the expectation to disclose any changes that affect their suitability.  The childminder and her assistant sometimes miss opportunities to support children's communication and language skills, for example, to name unfamiliar objects.  The childminder does not gather as much information as possible from parents about children's developmental starting points to influence her initial planning of activities.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder makes good use of her professional conversations, observations and knowledge of children's next steps in learning to plan a broad range of experiences.  The childminder prepares children well for school and they make good progress from their individual starting points.  Children behave well. They are kind to each other, helpful and polite. For example, they listen well and help when it is time to tidy away.  Children make independent choices about their play. For example, some children decide to play outside, while others choose to play imaginatively with the pirate ship.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 provide Ofsted with the details of new assistants so that appropriate checks on their suitability can be completed 07/12/2017

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that assistants know to inform the childminder of any changes that may affect their suitability. 07/12/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 use all opportunities to support children's communication and language skills even further  gather more information from parents when children start to support the childminder in her initial planning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching as children played inside and outside and discussed children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder, an assistant and the children at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector considered the written views of parents.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector sampled documentation, including the processes used for self-evaluation, the suitability checks of assistants and assessing children's progress.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder had not informed Ofsted of a new assistant to ensure that Ofsted could fully complete the suitability checks. In addition, she does not ensure the assistants' ongoing suitability, such as informing them of the expectation to disclose any information that may affect their suitability. Nonetheless, the childminder has completed a Disclosure and Barring Service check, which reduces the risk to children. The childminder ensures that she and her assistants attend training so that they all understand their role to report concerns about a child's welfare. She uses her risk assessments well to provide children with a safe and secure environment. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder models good-quality teaching that supports her assistants to achieve an early years qualification. The childminder has improved her partnerships with parents and shares ideas on how to support children's learning at home. The childminder evaluates her provision well and

identifies ways to improve, such as developing the garden so that children can be more creative.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder monitors children's progress effectively. She identifies any gaps in children's learning, shares these with parents, and takes prompt action to support children's development. The childminder questions children well to encourage and extend their imaginative play. The most able children respond well and develop storylines as they play with the pirate ship. Children listen well to stories and become engrossed. For example, they are keen to count how many monkeys are in the tree. The most able children show curiosity and ask questions. The assistant encourages children to make guesses to deepen their understanding, such as to identify unfamiliar animals.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Although there are weaknesses in leadership and management, the childminder supports children's welfare well overall. The childminder supports children's emotional well-being effectively. She provides flexible settling-in arrangements to get to know the children well and meets their care needs efficiently. Children learn safe practices, for example, the assistant reminds them of the possible outcome if they swing the pirate ship. The childminder effectively supports children to share. Children cooperate well. For example, they know when their time is up or when they finish with a toy to pass it to their friend.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop good skills that prepare them well for their next steps. Children become independent. For example, they help themselves to drinks when they are thirsty and dress themselves for outdoor play. They listen well to instructions, such as how to ensure they put their boots on the right feet. Children concentrate well, for example, as they take turns in games. They confidently count how many tiles they have and predict how many more they need to find.
