Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder lacks knowledge and understanding of how and when to complete the required review of children's progress between the age of two and three years.  The childminder does not accurately assess or monitor children's ongoing progress. She fails to identify where children make less than expected progress.  The childminder does not develop targeted plans to help her support children's progress in weaker areas of their development, such as their speaking skills.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder works closely with parents to ensure children's health needs are met, such as where children have allergies and special dietary requirements. This provides reassurance for parents who comment positively about the care the childminder gives.  Children are independent and confident in the setting. They happily self-select from a suitable range of resources indoors and outdoors.  The childminder supports children's emotional well-being. She praises them often and gives them close support and attention. Children build a secure attachment to the childminder and enjoy spending time with her.  Children are polite and use good manners. The childminder teaches children to be kind and share resources with others.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve understanding of how to complete a progress check for children between the age of two and three years, including what the summary must contain and when this must be completed 14/02/2018

p.2

Due Date

 ensure accurate and ongoing assessments of children's progress are completed so that any gaps in their learning can be addressed promptly 14/02/2018

p.2

Due Date

 implement effective plans to promote children's learning that are targeted to children's individual needs, and address any weaker areas of their development to help them to progress well. 14/02/2018

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of all persons living and working on the premises.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector spoke to parents and took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has completed a review of children's progress between the age of two and three years. However, this is not individual to each child. It does not identify children's individual strengths or key areas where children's progress is less than expected. She does not know that this must be completed for all children who attend her setting, between the age of two and three years. However, she shares some information with parents about children's daily experiences. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows the procedures she must follow where she has concerns about children's welfare. The childminder reflects on her provision and identifies areas she would like to improve. She talks to other childminders to get ideas for activities and also to gather information about new developments in childcare practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder makes some assessments of children's progress, however, she does not accurately identify gaps in children's development, such as their speaking skills. She plans opportunities for children that they enjoy and show they are interested in. However, she does not have targeted plans in place to address key areas of learning where children make less progress. The childminder provides activities that engage children of different ages. Younger children enjoy the sensory feel of dried rice, whereas older children scoop the rice with spoons. The childminder introduces colours for older children to identify and encourages them to count. She talks to children throughout but does not focus her teaching on helping children to develop their speaking skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder does not promptly or robustly address weaker areas of children's development to help children to communicate effectively and develop key skills for the future. However, children are happy and show that they feel safe and secure. Children have opportunities to develop their physical skills in the fresh air. They visit the local park and use play equipment in the childminder's garden to climb and balance. Children eat healthy food at snack time. The childminder teaches children the names of the fruit they eat to develop their understanding of how to make healthy choices. Older children enjoy completing small tasks, such as helping the childminder to tidy away toys.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Weaknesses in teaching mean that children do not make good enough progress in all areas of learning, particularly in developing their language skills. However, they do learn to communicate through gesture and some speech. Children demonstrate suitable listening skills and respond to the childminder's instructions. They understand simple questions. Children engage well in activities, showing concentration. They are confident to make their own choices and settle quickly to the opportunities provided for them. However, children do not develop all of the key skills and are not prepared well enough for the next stage in their learning, such as school.
