This provision is good
The childminder communicates well with children. She introduces new words throughout activities and gives children the confidence to express themselves while they play. The childminder supervises children well, encouraging their independence. For example, younger children learn how to wash their hands and feed themselves with cutlery. The childminder provides a broad range of interesting experiences, supporting children to explore the world around them and make good progress in their learning. For example, they visit woodland and do bark rubbings on trees, then bring home leaves to create pictures. The childminder has a warm and caring nature, children feel confident to approach her for affection and reassurance. The childminder makes well-targeted plans to develop her teaching and resources. For example, she is improving her outdoor area to give children more opportunities to learn about the natural world.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not consistently encourage parents to share information about what children know and can do, to more precisely determine children's starting points and feed into ongoing assessments. The childminder's self-evaluation process is not fully effective in helping her to identify areas to take action, such as being fully aware of all the procedures to follow when updating information with Ofsted.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

develop monitoring further, in partnership with parents, to determine exactly what children know and can do, to help them make the best possible progress strengthen further the evaluation process to more precisely identify areas where action needs to be taken to improve practice.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector assessed the childminder's understanding of how to keep children safe. The inspector and the childminder evaluated a planned activity together. The inspector observed teaching and the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector sampled documentation including children's progress records, policies and the childminder's training records. The inspector talked to the childminder about how she evaluates her practice.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder completes thorough risk assessments and considers any hazards which she then minimises to ensure children's safety. She is confident explaining any indicators which may mean a child is at risk of harm. She knows who to contact if she has concerns about a child. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder uses a variety of methods to develop her knowledge and practice. For example, she recently completed enhanced safeguarding training to look further into supporting young girls at risk of harm from certain cultural practices. Parents speak highly about the care and teaching their children receive from the childminder. They value her flexibility around their changing needs and how she shares photographs of their children's achievements with them regularly.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder offers good opportunities for children to learn mathematics. For example, the childminder counts with younger children as they explore musical instruments and bang a xylophone. The childminder introduces language such as 'big', 'small' and 'more' as they play. All children enjoy learning about festivals and culture, such as when they create poppies and discuss the meaning of Remembrance Day. Children select books independently and read them with the childminder, lifting flaps and pointing at animals. This supports them to develop their early literacy skills well and to learn vocabulary as the childminder introduces new words. Children have many opportunities for exercise and fresh air. For example, they visit local parks with climbing equipment and enjoy chasing bubbles on the school playground.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children receive encouragement to be considerate of one another and follow simple house rules, such as being kind, sharing toys and taking turns. This helps them to develop good behaviour within their group. The childminder demonstrates good hygiene practices, such as when she changes nappies and helps children wash their hands. The childminder discusses which foods are healthy as children eat, supporting them to develop an understanding about healthy lifestyles. The childminder praises children's behaviour enthusiastically, helping them recognise when they have shown positive behaviour and raising their self-esteem.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Younger children enjoy learning about colours and they explore paint with their fingers and create new colours as they mix. All children develop their physical skills well, such as when they play football or make marks with a range of different materials. Children are motivated to learn, they make choices in their play and concentrate well at tasks. They develop the small muscles in their hands they will later need for writing. Children are well prepared for their next steps in learning.
