This provision is good
Self-evaluation and improvement plans include the views of parents and children. The childminder's capacity to continually improve and drive forward change is good. Parents contribute to establishing what children know and can do when they join the setting. They exchange information about children's learning and experiences at home with the childminder and receive regular, good quality summaries of children's progress. The childminder consistently models mathematics during play and daily routines. Children count and compare objects during their independent play and they understand that counting helps them find the total amount. Children show close attachments with the nurturing childminder. Her sensitivity, calmness and ability to support and guide children helps them to develop a strong sense of belonging and self-confidence. The childminder promotes children's learning well. She interacts with the children as

they play and uses effective questioning skills to develop their understanding. The childminder is enthusiastic and keen to develop her provision. She attends training and keeps her knowledge up to date.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not consistently make the most of opportunities to extend children's understanding of letters and the sounds they make in the spoken word. The childminder does not fully help children to understand how good practices with regard to hygiene contribute to their good health.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

broaden opportunities for children to extend their understanding of letters and the sounds they make in the spoken word build on the already good opportunities that help children learn further about how good practices with regard to hygiene contribute to their good health.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children during the inspection. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback. The inspector held a meeting with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of suitability of persons living in the household.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows how to identify signs that a child may be at risk from harm and how to make the appropriate referral when necessary. Robust risk assessments are carried out. This helps to minimise hazards and keep children safe. The childminder has good connections with other childminders and exchanges ideas about activities she provides for children and offers support to others. The childminder has good links with the local school and works closely with them to ensure children are well prepared for the move on to school. She has systems in place to exchange information with providers when children attend other settings, so she can fully assess children's learning needs.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides activities and resources that reflect children's interests and keep them motivated to learn. She has a good knowledge and understanding of how children learn. She uses observations and assessments of children's learning well, to identify and plan for what they need to learn next. The childminder helps children to build on their writing skills, providing them with a good range of tools to make marks, draw and write. Children are encouraged to follow their own ideas and try new things. For example, during an activity using leaves to make pictures, children chose their resources independently and produce individual pieces of art work. Children remain motivated and engaged for sustained periods of time.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children enjoy spending time with the childminder. She is a very good role model. Children's behaviour is very good and they have excellent manners. Children are confident in new situations. They happily talk to visitors, demonstrating they feel secure. They play well together and take turns and show kindness to each other. The childminder makes good use of the wider community taking the children to lots of places, such as the park, zoo and local play groups. This gives the children the opportunity to learn about the wider world. The childminder offers praise and encouragement as children share responsibility for small tasks such as tidying up toys.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are all making good progress from their individual starting points. Children's independence is encouraged. For example, they get their own shoes when they are going outside. Children try hard and persistently attempt to achieve their goals. For example, they show determination as they use knives to cut up fruit for their snack. Children show their love of books and take delight in learning new words such as 'slither' and 'squelch'. They are developing the skills and attitudes which prepare them for their next stage in learning and their eventual move on to school.
