This provision is good

 The childminder works closely with children and their families to provide high-quality individualised care. They regularly share information about children's progress so that children benefit from consistency in their care and make good progress in their learning.  Children settle quickly and happily in the warm and caring environment. They develop strong relationships with the childminder, which helps them to feel safe and secure.  The childminder provides good support for children's language and communication skills. All children are confident talkers. Young children express their delight as they babble and make a range of noises. Older children learn new words through sharing books and conversations with the childminder.  The childminder makes good use of detailed assessment records to constantly review children's achievements and monitor progress. She provides a wide range of enjoyable activities to help children achieve well.

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder keeps abreast of changes and reflects well on her provision to enable her to continue to develop her knowledge and improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not maximise opportunities for children to become fully independent in their self-care.  The childminder does not consistently make effective use of everyday opportunities to help children learn how to keep themselves safe.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance opportunities for children to become fully independent in their self-care  make more use of everyday opportunities to teach children how to keep themselves safe.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including children's records.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took account of parents' views through discussion and from their written comments.  The inspector observed the children at play and the quality of the childminder's interactions to support children's learning.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is able to recognise possible signs that may mean a child is at risk, and knows what actions to take to keep children safe. She maintains a secure environment and supervises children well to help keep them safe. She accesses mandatory training and professional learning opportunities to extend her practice and knowledge. She has attended training to help her understand how difficult circumstances can affect children so that she is able to fully support them and improve her teaching to maximise their development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses a wide range of teaching skills to ensure all children receive good support in their learning. She effectively models the use of resources as younger children actively engage in sensory exploration of sounds and delight in their findings. Older children learn to associate numerals with time and the daily routine, as the childminder effectively explains and encourages children to recognise numbers on the clock and helps them work out how long it is to snack time. They persevere and are able to solve simple problems when completing puzzles. Due to increased opportunities, children are able to name some shapes and use mathematical language in their play. Children show good early reading skills and older children recognise their own names.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children confidently initiate their own play and make independent choices within the well set out environment. They learn to care for the toys and, with the childminder's encouragement, correctly match items back into their labelled containers. Children make healthy choices as they select from a wide range of fruits at snack time. They learn to name the fruits and enjoy the social occasion. Children have secure relationships with the childminder and learn to care for their friends. They are kind to one another and children behave well. Older children show empathy for the younger ones when they awake from their sleep crying, and bring them age-appropriate books to read.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and are well prepared to move on to the next stage of their learning and eventual move to school. They are confident and concentrate for extended periods when involved in interesting activities, such as discussing and exploring autumnal artefacts. Children listen well and make increasing use of speech to express their thoughts, ideas and needs. They count items and learn the names of shapes.
