This provision is good

 Partnerships between the staff and parents are strong. Staff know the families very well. They work closely, to support children's learning and well-being.  Staff know children's abilities very well. They make accurate assessments, and provide enjoyable activities to support their learning and monitor children's progress thoroughly. This enables children to make good progress from their starting points.  Staff quickly identify when children need additional help and actively support parents in arranging early interventions. They work effectively with other professionals to help these children make strong progress and catch up with others.  The provider analyses children's records to identify variations in the progress of different groups of children. She makes effective plans to address them, for instance, arranging training to focus on and support boys' learning.  Staff actively work with other settings to support children in preparation for starting

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The environment is very busy, which distracts the children at times, making it hard for them to focus and concentrate on activities and their learning.  There is limited free indoor floor space, which restricts the opportunities for children to be safe and physically active at times of their choosing.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed staff and children in the playrooms and the outdoor play area.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day of the inspection.  The inspector sampled documentation relating to suitability checks, training records, planning, and children's progress records.  The inspector held discussions with the manager and staff.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The provider has effective systems to ensure staff complete their induction, monitor the provision and staff performance, and identify individual targets for staff development. She encourages staff to evaluate the impact of training and share their knowledge with their colleagues. Recent training has resulted in staff's increased understanding of how to support children's social development. Safeguarding is effective. Staff complete effective risk assessments. They have a very clear understanding of their responsibilities and procedures to follow if they have concerns about a child's welfare. The provider continually checks and reinforces staff's knowledge. The provider deploys staff well, meeting required ratios and supervising children effectively.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff are very knowledgeable about children's abilities and their next steps in learning. They are enthusiastic and work well together to encourage children's progress. They make good use of young children's interest in bubbles and dinosaurs. For example, they encourage children's attempts to blow and chase the bubbles, developing children's control of their bodies. During children's small-world play, staff focus on specific words linked to dinosaurs, to build children's vocabulary. Staff skilfully encourage children to persist at activities. For example, they describe how to fit a jigsaw puzzle piece and show children what to do, to help the children achieve the task independently. Staff support children's awareness of size and shape, and extend their imaginary play. For example, they encourage children to plan and build imaginary boats, participating and encouraging the children to describe the conditions and events in their imaginary adventure.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff warmly welcome children and their families. Children are secure and familiar with routines. For example, they quickly stop to listen when staff use a bell to attract their attention. Staff reinforce routines well, such as using visual prompts to let children know when activities are changing. Staff have a good knowledge of children's routines and needs. They sensitively and quickly comfort and reassure children to help them settle. Staff change children's nappies regularly, as needed. They provide children with balanced meals. Staff support parents to toilet train their children well and warmly praise children's successes. Staff sensitively challenge discriminatory views, teaching children positively about different viewpoints and customs from their own and others' cultures.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop skills that prepare them well for their future learning in school. They gain good literacy, language and mathematical skills. They develop dexterity as they prepare fruit for snacks. Children enjoy listening to stories, and learn to identify and create shapes, including those needed to form letters. Children talk happily about their experiences and imaginary play. Younger children make their wishes known, using hand gestures and sign language as their speech and vocabulary grow.
