This provision is good

 The childminder has established good links with other settings that children attend. For example, she has an effective understanding of what children are learning and she offers complementary learning opportunities in her setting.  Children enjoy a welcoming environment and feel at home and settled in the childminder's care. Children are keen to involve the childminder in their play, for instance, they share their toys with her.  The childminder has a good system to assess and monitor children's development. She has a strong focus on helping children to learn new skills and an accurate understanding of what they can do.  Children make good progress in their development. The childminder successfully builds children's confidence in their abilities and supports them well to have choices in their play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder misses opportunities to help children develop their independence, particularly in managing daily tasks for themselves.  At times, the childminder does not consider how she could extend children's thinking and problem-solving skills further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to develop their independence, to promote their self- care skills  strengthen the support for children to be able to build further on their thinking and problem-solving skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector jointly observed an activity with the childminder and discussed children's learning.  The inspector gained the views of parents through written feedback and considered their views.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact on children's learning.  The inspector viewed documentation such as children's learning records and evidence of the childminder's suitability.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder develops her knowledge effectively. For instance, she completes training and considers new ideas to further support children's learning. She recently extended her knowledge on how to better support children's mathematical development. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of what may indicate a child is suffering from harm. She regularly monitors children's attendance to support children's safety and knows the steps to follow if she has concerns. The childminder reflects on her practice well, such as reviewing the effectiveness of her teaching and changing her approach if needed.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has effective relationships with parents. For example, she seeks their views to help further her practice and shares children's learning records to keep them well informed about their children's progress. Children have good mathematical knowledge. For instance, children can count and are beginning to complete simple subtraction as they tell the childminder they only have two pieces missing. The childminder supports children's communication and language development effectively, and children are confident communicators. For example, the childminder encourages children to describe how they like to eat their fruit at snack time and children are able to answer articulately.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder successfully helps children to develop their physical skills. For example, children enjoy exploring play dough and learn to squeeze and use scissors. The childminder is a positive role model for children. Children have good behaviour and manners, and respond well to support from the childminder. The childminder offers children good support to learn about a range of cultures and celebrations that are different to their own. For instance, children make candle holders from clay as they learn about the celebration of Diwali. The childminder supports children to be sociable and develop relationships with each other. For example, she plans activities to help children learn to take turns and spend time together.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have good imaginations. For instance, they explore small construction toys and are able to make a range of recognisable objects and explain what they are. Children are motivated to explore and keen to engage in learning. They have clear ideas about what they want to achieve and remember past learning experiences they have enjoyed. Children learn skills to help them be ready for their next stage of education, including school.
