p.1

This provision is inadequate

 Children's safety and welfare are not assured. The childminder has failed to inform Ofsted about all her assistants, and has not provided the required details to ensure the necessary checks can be completed, to confirm their suitability to work with children.  The childminder does not consistently keep records showing she has checked her assistant's Disclosure and Barring Service checks.  The childminder does not always exchange precise information with parents to further promote a shared approach to children's ongoing learning, and to help them support children's development at home.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder holds regular supervision meetings with her assistants to help them to continually develop their knowledge and skills. She provides each assistant with a comprehensive staff handbook to help them understand their roles and responsibilities.  The childminder is warm, friendly and kind to children. She gives them choices of what they want to do throughout the day, and praises them often. Children settle in quickly at the setting, demonstrating they feel safe and secure.  The childminder develops good partnerships with key persons at other settings children attend. She regularly shares children's development information with them and this helps to promote continuity in their learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure Ofsted are provided with the information required, to carry out suitability checks for individuals aged 16 years and over, working on the premises 26/10/2017

p.2

Due Date

 make sure records are kept showing that Disclosure and Barring Service checks have been carried out on all assistants. 26/10/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen information sharing with all parents to promote even greater continuity in children's ongoing learning and development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder joining in activities with children and discussed the learning that was taking place with her.  The inspector saw the areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents and the childminder's reflections on her practice.  The inspector looked at children's development and assessment records, evidence of the suitability of household members and a range of other documents, including the safeguarding policy.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective. The childminder has failed to notify Ofsted of all her assistants, or to provide them with all the required information to enable suitability checks to be carried out. Although the childminder states she has seen the evidence of her assistant's Disclosure and Barring Service checks, she has no record of this. Nevertheless, the childminder knows the signs that indicate a child may be at risk of harm and the procedures to follow to report any concerns she has about children's welfare. The childminder reflects on the activities she provides, on children's progress, and their level of engagement. Along with training opportunities, this helps to ensure that her assistant's practice, and her own, continues to meet children's needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder skilfully teaches children through her well-planned activities. For example, she introduces numbers through rhymes and reinforces children's learning through cooking activities. As children bake currant buns, the childminder ensures children have uninterrupted time to engage and explore through touch, taste and smell. The childminder teaches children how to use tools, such as scissors. She understands the importance of giving children lots of opportunities to practise new skills, such as snipping paper. The childminder gains effective information from parents about children's learning when they start with her. This helps her to swiftly identify children's starting points, abilities and interests. The childminder uses this information to identify next steps in learning for each child that she incorporates into her planning and teaching.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Weaknesses in leadership and management means children's safety and welfare is not assured. Despite this, children demonstrate through their actions and good behaviour that they feel secure in the childminder's care. Children have free access to the garden, where they engage in physical activities. They also enjoy exploring nature as they look for frogs in the fenced off pond, and grow vegetables. The childminder helps children to understand how a balanced diet benefits their health and well-being. She talks to them as they eat healthy meals, and makes sure they know where their drinks are. Through written documentation, parents speak highly of the childminder and her assistants, and state they have good knowledge of children's interests and needs, and this helps children to flourish in their care.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are consistently busy and motivated to learn. They enjoy taking part in a wide range of activities to promote their good all-round development. For example, they make marks with pens on whiteboards to help develop their early writing skills. Children enjoy sharing stories with the childminder. They are beginning to understand how stories are structured and can anticipate what might happen next. Children are prepared well for the next stage in their learning and ultimately for starting school.
