Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Staff do not always ensure that the nursery premises are clean and suitable for purpose.  Staff do not consistently follow the healthy balanced menu plans that are provided to ensure that children always receive a balanced diet.  Staff do not always use different areas and make the most of the available space, including use of the outdoor area, to stimulate and extend children's interests further.  Activities and experiences planned for children do not consistently challenge them sufficiently to extend their learning and promote higher levels of achievement. Children are making satisfactory progress in their learning and development.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The management team works with the well-qualified staff to evaluate their strengths. They set clear targets for improvement, showing a capacity to improve.  Managers ensure that staff receive appropriate training to help them develop their knowledge and skills. Staff have also completed all mandatory training, including safeguarding, first aid and food hygiene. This helps to ensure that children are kept safe.  Parents spoken to on the day were very happy with the care and education that their children receive. They know who their key person is. Staff share information about children's progress daily. They engage with parents to support children's learning at home.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 make better use of the available space inside and outside to stimulate children further and meet their individual needs.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspection took place as a result of a risk assessment by Ofsted.  The inspector had a tour of the premises. She observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector and operational manager completed a joint evaluation of a number of activities during the inspection.  The inspector held a meeting with the operational manager. She looked at relevant documentation, such as risk assessments, checklists and policies and procedures. She discussed self-evaluation and checked evidence of the qualifications and suitability of staff working in the nursery.  The inspector spoke to children and parents on the day, viewed parental feedback and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

On the day of inspection, some areas used by older children had not been cleaned appropriately. This had little impact on children's health and well-being because there were no children using these areas on the day. Generally, risk assessments and checklists help to minimise risks for children. Safeguarding is effective. Staff know the procedures to follow if they have a concern about the welfare of a child. They have completed training on new legislation and are aware of guidelines to maintain children's safety. Managers ensure that newly appointed staff receive a thorough induction so that they know their roles and responsibilities. Regular supervision meetings help staff to share concerns and discuss personal and professional issues. Policies and procedures are shared with parents. There is a clear procedure for raising concerns and these are dealt with by managers in the allocated timeframe.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Staff are not always receptive to indications that children are showing an interest in exploring different areas that are available for play. For example, some children show a desire to play in different rooms and show an interest in the outdoors. Although staff complete regular observations, plans do not extend children's learning sufficiently to help them make better progress. Babies enjoy playing and exploring puffed rice. Staff encourage them to feel it, listen to it and watch it fall. Staff promote satisfactory communication and language skills with older children. For example, they encourage children to listen and repeat words, such as 'crunch'.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Managers plan a healthy, balanced and nutritious menu which is shared with parents. However, staff do not consistently follow menus precisely to ensure that children receive the range of necessary nutrients to promote their good health. Staff follow procedures to ensure that food served is safe and at the correct temperature for children. When babies have their nappies changed, this is done in line with their needs. Staff follow appropriate hygiene procedures to maintain their health and well-being. Staff promote positive behaviour strategies with children. Older children are involved in setting their own boundaries. They begin to learn the difference between right and wrong. Staff engage with parents to support young children's emotional well-being. Children bond with their key person and develop good attachments.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not make good enough progress in their learning. However, most children are settled and happy. Overall, they are building satisfactory skills for the future and systems are in place to support children moving on to school. Children are becoming independent in relation to their age and ability. Babies are motivated to crawl, stand and walk.
