ongoing professional development to further improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not engage children's interest in stories successfully to support their early literacy development fully.  Sometimes, the childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to develop children's awareness of numbers and mathematical language.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Inspection activities

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder follows comprehensive risk assessment procedures and reviews these regularly to help keep children safe, including on outings. She maintains appropriate ratios consistently and has a good understanding of her responsibilities. The childminder keeps her safeguarding knowledge up to date successfully. For example, she knows how to identify children who may be at risk of harm from extreme behaviours and views. The childminder receives positive feedback from parents who say that their children are happy in the setting and make good progress. The childminder develops her skills continuously to improve the quality of teaching. For example, following training, she has a better understanding of why children play the way they do, to help her plan effectively for their individual needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder monitors children's progress closely and plans interesting learning experiences to support their individual skills and abilities. She uses good-quality interactions and provides an ongoing narrative to encourage children's language development successfully, and to teach them new skills. For example, she encourages children's confidence to communicate in English and their home languages as they enjoy exploring writing materials. The childminder guides parents to support their children's learning at home successfully and communicates with them effectively.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has a respectful approach to children and helps them to respect others, such as teaching them about different cultures and backgrounds. She has a good understanding of how to manage children's behaviour and she helps them to feel confident and self-assured. The childminder encourages independence successfully. For example, she reminds children to help tidy up and they respond readily. The childminder makes sure that children remain comfortable during their time with her. She provides regular opportunities for them to exercise, sleep and eat healthy food to support their well-being effectively.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Young children form secure attachments with the childminder as soon as they start in the setting. They respond well to appropriate boundaries and learn about safe behaviour, such as sitting sensibly at a table while eating. Young children initiate and join in with interactions, and repeat words readily in their home language and in English. They show a good understanding of language as they follow instructions and respond well to suggestions. Young children make good progress in their physical development as they develop control while using writing materials and exploring construction toys.
