This provision is good
The childminder implements effective settling-in procedures. This helps children to quickly develop strong emotional bonds with her. Children demonstrate great trust in the childminder and enjoy their time with her. Parents are extremely warm and positive about the service the childminder provides. She is conscientious about keeping parents informed about their children's learning and overall well-being. Children's developing language skills are supported well. The childminder engages them in conversations and introduces them to enjoyable stories and songs. Children have many different and enjoyable trips into their local community. They explore the natural world and learn about wildlife. Children develop good social skills. They learn to take turns, share their toys and enjoy the company of other children.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Occasionally, the childminder does not give children the time they need, to think about and respond to her questions. The childminder has not yet developed secure links with other pre-school settings that children attend to promote better continuity in their care and learning.

Inspection activities
The inspector spoke with the childminder and children during the inspection. A specific activity was discussed to evaluate the quality of teaching and children's learning. The views of parents were gathered through written testimonials and a parent survey. The inspector read the childminder's self-evaluation and discussed it with her. The inspector looked at areas of the childminder's home used by the children and the resources available to them. A range of documents were reviewed, including evidence of the childminder's training, children's records and some policies and procedures.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder provides children with a safe and secure environment. She makes sure all areas of her home are checked daily, and supervises children effectively. The childminder understands the possible signs of child abuse and how to refer any concerns about a child's welfare. She attends training regularly to update her knowledge. The childminder tailors her professional development well to meet children's needs. For example, she has attending workshops on language development to support children in widening their vocabulary. The childminder asks the views of children and parents to identify areas for improvement. She has links with the local schools that help her to support older children's ongoing development.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder knows the children very well. She makes regular observations and assessments to help her plan for children's ongoing learning. She uses children's interests well to plan activities that are challenging and entertaining. Children enjoy spontaneous activities, such as watching snails 'race' and discussing their lifestyles. They look forward to planned trips to the library and local activity groups. The childminder uses practical activities well to extend children's learning. For example, she and the children use windfall apples to make an apple cake. Children learn about quantities, as they measure ingredients and observe the changes as the cake bakes. The childminder works closely with parents and other professionals to support children who need extra help.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children's physical development is promoted well. They visit the woods to clamber over logs and play on varied climbing equipment at the park. The childminder encourages children to use their fingers to manipulate different materials, such as play dough. This helps them to develop the small-muscle skills, and control they need for learning to write. Children sit together to enjoy their mealtimes. The childminder encourages them to use appropriate utensils and learn good manners. She talks to the children about healthy food choices. Children develop a good understanding of how food is grown, for example, they help the childminder tend the allotment.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make expected progress, given their starting points. They are developing the skills they need to support their future learning. Children use numbers in their play, for example, they count the stars in their pictures and pick out the shape of the moon. Children confidently undertake practical tasks. They put on their wellingtons before playing outdoors, and independently wash their hands. Children are inquisitive and keen to learn more. They approach activities with enthusiasm and demonstrate they can focus on what they are doing and concentrate well.
