Inspection activities
The inspector observed interactions between the childminder and children as children played. The inspector spoke to the childminder about how she plans for children's learning and how she monitors their progress. The inspector spoke to children as they played and took part in their activities. The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation and children's records. The inspector discussed with the childminder how she updates her skills and knowledge and how she evaluates the provision of care she offers.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder has a good understanding of her role. She updates her knowledge and skills through research. The childminder is keen to further her awareness of children's learning, for example, through training that supports her understanding of how children lead their play, so she can adapt her interactions and improve outcomes for children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands how to protect the children in her care and the procedures to follow should she have any concerns. The childminder has positive partnerships with parents. She has effective systems to find out about children's backgrounds and interests so that she can plan effectively for their care and learning. The childminder evaluates well. She has clear priorities for the future improvement of her provision that include extending partnerships with parents.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder is confident in her interactions with children. She demonstrates a warm, caring and positive attitude and children respond to her well. The childminder is skilful in her approach to extend children's learning. For example, she asks meaningful questions as children play. She gives clear instructions and explanations as children try to solve problems and takes an active approach in their activities. For instance, when reading books, she helps children to understand the characters and what is happening. Likewise, the childminder helps children to think independently by giving clues, such as when they fit pieces of a jigsaw to complete the puzzle.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder supports children's independence well. Children make choices about their play. They help to tidy up before the end of the day and respect their toys and resources. The childminder helps children to understand the benefits of healthy lifestyles. This includes, for example, regular outings and opportunities for physical play, developing self- care skills and understanding healthy eating. Children are responsible and show consideration for each other's differences. For instance, they are willing to share and take turns during activities and when playing with favourite toys.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children play with interest and confidence. They enjoy building train tracks and naming the different engines, which helps to support their physical skills and communication. Children develop this language further as they learn new words during story times, such as 'velvet', 'soft' and hairy'. Overall, they develop an awareness and understanding of the comprehension and context of the books they read with the childminder. Children have fun acting out characters from popular television shows and play cooperatively with each other as they build relationships and self-awareness. Children show readiness for the next stages of their learning.
