This provision is good
Children are happy and have strong bonds with the childminder. They develop secure and friendly relationships with others. The childminder assesses and monitors the children's learning and development well. She provides interesting activities that help children to make good progress given their starting points. Children are curious and fully engaged in play. The childminder plans activities around their interests in an inviting and stimulating environment that motivates children to engage in their learning. The childminder encourages children's communication and language well. For example, she repeats words back to children clearly and provides commentary as they play. Self-evaluation is effective. The childminder meets with other professionals and carries out research to develop and enhance her practice. This has helped her to develop her observations and assessments to focus on the characteristics of effective learning and

areas within the curriculum, to identify children's next steps in learning more effectively.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder occasionally misses opportunities to support younger children in their counting. Although the childminder shares information with parents about their child's day, she does not encourage them as much as she could, so they share information that will help her plan activities to enrich children's learning and development further.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder and children at play. The inspector held conversations with the childminder and children at convenient times. The inspector viewed various documents, including children's records, suitability of all adults in the childminder's home and risk assessments, and took into account written views from parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. Since registration, the childminder has attended further safeguarding training to ensure her knowledge is up to date. She is confident in her understanding of local safeguarding procedures and knows what to do if she has a concern about a child. The childminder effectively shares any significant events with parents and Ofsted, and completes regular risk assessments to maintain children's safety. The childminder keeps up to date with changes through reading relevant articles that help her to include new ideas to extend children's play. For example, to encourage children's exploration of texture and messy play further, she has provided sand, mud and water, as well as many large resources to support their physical development outdoors.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gathers clear information from parents about children's starting points, so she gets a good understanding of each child's individual needs. She observes children as they play and uses these assessments and the children's interests well to support them with their development. For example, the childminder recognises children's interest in vehicles and uses this to teach colours and compare sizes. Children confidently name the make of vehicles they have to hand. The childminder plans enjoyable and stimulating play activities that keep children occupied and engaged. For example, children enjoy exploring and finding different forest-related objects in a box of leaves, eagerly sharing where they went to collect the leaves. The childminder uses opportunities like this well to support and extend their communication by asking questions, which encourage children to think as they recall past events. The childminder joins in with children's play and takes this

opportunity to provide support and challenge. For example, encouraging children to pick up and place puzzle pieces the right way round.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder has a very calm and caring approach. She effectively encourages children's good manners and behaviour. For example, she praises children's efforts and achievements to support their confidence and self-esteem. Children show genuine concern for each other, for example, going to their friends when they injure themselves and become upset. The childminder makes good use of her garden and nearby local facilities to ensure that children have opportunities to be active, meet with other children and get plenty of fresh air. Children develop a good understanding of how to stay safe and healthy. For example, the childminder reminds them to sit and not stand on a chair.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are happy and settle well. They show a keen interest in learning. They develop good attitudes and skills that prepare them well for their next stages of learning, and their eventual move to nursery and school. They confidently lead their play, for instance, finding additional resources to support their ideas when moving toy bricks from one vehicle to another. Children communicate well and have good social skills.
