This provision is good

 The childminder has developed very close and warm relationships with children. Children respond very well to the childminder. They listen to her, willingly follow her instructions and behave well.  Overall, children engage in well-planned learning experiences that support their good progress. The childminder interacts well with the children, encouraging them to think, experiment and try again.  Parents provide positive feedback about the quality of the childminder's practice. They feel well informed about children's daily activities and learning.  Children make good progress from their starting points. They are well supported to prepare for their next stage in learning and the move to school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always respond as effectively as possible to children's emerging interests during planned activities.  The childminder has not fully extended her initial-assessment procedures to include detailed information about children's achievements.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make even better use of children's emerging interests from planned activities  sharpen the focus on gathering information to support initial assessments of children's achievements.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the areas of the premises used for childminding purposes.  The inspector observed activities in the indoor area. She jointly evaluated practice with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector reviewed parents' written feedback to take their views into account.  The inspector reviewed relevant documentation, including children's records and evidence of the childminder's suitability and qualifications.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibilities. She confidently describes the potential indicators of abuse and her procedures to manage such concerns. She has implemented robust policies and risk assessments to remove or minimise the risk of harm to children. The childminder has an accurate understanding of the quality of her setting. She makes good use of professional development. For example, a recent refresher course about letters and sounds has enabled her to increase the opportunities to support children's early literacy skills and prepare them for school.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has good teaching skills which help to develop children's focus, motivation and engagement. Overall, she regularly observes children and monitors their progress closely. She provides activities that support children's development. Children enjoy testing the properties of different objects. The childminder encourages them to guess which objects might float or sink and why. Children thoroughly enjoy being creative. They describe the picture they are making with different colours and shapes. They use a variety of tools, such as scissors and pens, with good physical coordination. The childminder supports children's opportunities to be creative very well.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are well behaved and responsive to adults. They readily engage in routines and follow instructions. Children are encouraged to learn more about the world around them. They regularly go out on trips in the local community, for example, to the library and other places of interest. Children also learn about cultural events from around the world. The childminder ensures that children follow hygiene routines to minimise the risk of cross- infection. Children demonstrate a good understanding of why this is important. They have a good awareness of their own safety. For example, they pick up play knives and tell the childminder that these can be sharp. They practise cutting safely on wooden play foods, such as cakes and vegetables, as they prepare a 'salad' for lunch. The childminder uses praise effectively to develop children's self-confidence and self-esteem.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in all aspects of their learning. They are well prepared for their next stages of learning and the move to school. Children demonstrate good listening and attention skills as they follow instructions from the childminder. They have good social skills and can take turns during games. They have good communication skills and talk confidently to adults. Children develop good thinking skills. They think about problems and find ways to overcome them.
