This provision is good
Children develop strong relationships with the childminder. They settle quickly and are confident and happy in the nurturing and welcoming environment. Children are confident to choose what they want to do and how they wish to play. The childminder provides a good range of toys and resources and responds positively to children's interests and ideas. The childminder is a positive role model. Children respond well to her calm and consistent guidance and support. Children learn the importance of socially acceptable behaviour from a young age. Children have good opportunities to learn about the world and explore the local community. This helps children to develop their social skills and positive attitudes towards others from different backgrounds. The childminder is fully committed to further improving the quality of her setting.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder is less confident in providing a broad range of opportunities for children to practise and build on their developing literacy skills. The childminder does not always gather enough detailed information from parents about what their child already knows and can do, in order to help her plan their learning fully from the very beginning.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

increase the range of opportunities for children to practise their developing literacy skills gain more detailed information from parents about what their child knows and can already do, when they first start, and use this information to plan for children's learning from the outset.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outside and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, children's records and a selection of policies and procedures. The inspector took account of the views of parents, provided through written feedback. The inspector viewed all areas of the home used for childminding. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. She evaluated a focused activity with the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is confident with her responsibility to follow appropriate procedures should she have a concern about a child's welfare. She is vigilant about children's safety within the home and when on outings. The childminder develops her skills and knowledge to support her professional development. For example, she welcomes support and guidance from local authority improvement advisers. She meets with other childminders and makes good use of training and research. This helps her to keep up to date with legislation, share ideas for good practice and improve outcomes for children. Parents are complimentary about the service the childminder provides. They describe how she is conscientious, competent and trustworthy.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder plans activities and learning opportunities that stem from her observations of what children know and enjoy. She talks and listens to children as they play. The childminder asks children questions, and repeats and models the correct use of words and language. Children become confident communicators. They are sociable and have fun together. They play inside a cardboard box house. Young children peer through the windows and laugh as the childminder says 'peep-po'. Using blankets and chairs, older children make dens and invite younger children to join them. They declare themselves 'neighbours' as they stand side by side.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Overall, partnerships with parents are positive. The childminder seeks information about children's individual needs and routines and ensures that she can meet them. Children seek comfort and reassurance from the childminder when needed and are keen to include her in their play. They demonstrate that they feel safe and secure in the environment. The childminder encourages children to be healthy and follow good hygiene routines. She works with parents to ensure children benefit from a varied and balanced diet. Mealtimes are sociable learning opportunities where children of all ages come together and engage in conversations. Children develop their independence. Babies feed themselves with increasing skill and older children confidently attend to their own self-care needs. Children benefit from regular exercise outdoors as they play in the childminder's garden and visit local parks and community groups.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are progressing well and acquiring the skills they need for future learning. Babies confidently explore the environment and investigate a range of sensory and natural objects. For example, they hold wooden sticks in each hand and show a deep sense of satisfaction as they successfully bring them together to make a noise. Older children spontaneously count, sort and match coloured cars.
