This provision is good
The childminder uses her experience as a primary school teacher to plan a good range of interesting activities to promote children's progress. Children develop close relationships with the childminder. They welcome her involvement in their play. The childminder listens with interest to what they have to say, asking thoughtful questions to encourage them to explain what they mean. The childminder works closely with parents to involve them in their children's learning. Together they share children's achievements and plan for what children need to learn next. The childminder places a high priority on supporting children's personal, social and emotional development. She uses calm and consistent explanations to help children learn to share and take turns. Children are learning to manage their behaviour and to take account of the views and feelings of others. The childminder uses well-established routines to help children learn what is expected

of them. Children are confident and self-assured. They express their views, sharing ideas and asking questions as they play.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Sometimes, the childminder does not make the very best use of opportunities to promote young children's early reading and writing skills. Children do not have regular opportunities to learn about and experience how things grow and change over time.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed children playing indoors and outside. She walked to a nearby nursery with the childminder. The inspector evaluated a planned activity with the childminder. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector viewed documentation, including children's records and checked evidence of the suitability of household members. The inspector took account of the views of parents from their written comments.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has attended relevant training to ensure she is confident about how to protect children and keep them safe from harm. She ensures her home is safe and secure and reminds children of safe practices as they play. The childminder uses an online forum to help keep her knowledge and skills up to date. She evaluates her practice and seeks the views of parents to help her identify ways of improving outcomes for children. The childminder has an accurate picture of children's stage of development. She uses her good knowledge of child development to identify and target any gaps in children's learning. She shares information with other settings that children attend to promote continuity of approach.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder makes good use of information gained form her observations and assessments to plan for what children need to learn next. She introduces different resources into children's play to promote their interest and enjoyment. She adapts her teaching skills well to take account of children's stage of development and the way they respond to her planned activities. She promotes children's mathematical skills by encouraging them to sort and match objects by colour and size. She builds on children's interest in imaginative play to extend their learning. For example, while they play with a medical set, she encourages children to take turns at being the patient. Children are aware of the elements of a healthy lifestyle. For example, they say another child needs some fresh air to make them feel better.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder gathers useful information from parents to help her settle children into her care. She is a good role model and encourages children to be kind and polite. The childminder encourages children to become independent, such as putting on their shoes before they go outside. Children have many opportunities to practise their physical skills in the fresh air. They enjoy playing in the garden and going for walks around the local area. The childminder knows the children in her care very well. She recognises their frustrations and calmly helps them learn to manage their feelings. Parents praise the progress their children have made with the childminder.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are developing key skills to support their future learning and eventual move on to school. They are happy and inquisitive. Children are eager to explore their own ideas while making suggestions about why things happen. They demonstrate good hand-to-eye coordination while using tools, such as tweezers, to pick up small objects. They are very imaginative and enjoy acting out roles, such as being a firefighter and telling the childminder how to help put out the fire.
