Good attention is given to improving health and well-being. Staff work very effectively in partnership with a range of professionals, to ensure that individual and holistic needs are met. The development of other skills, such as learning to cook, performing domestic tasks and using public transport, is also given good attention.

They have an excellent understanding of the diverse needs and vulnerabilities of the child and the young person. The manager and staff are robust and proactive in their practice, and as a result they demonstrate to the child and young person how much they care for them. When incidents do occur, measures are taken to keep children and young people safe. The team reflects on how further safeguards or improvements might be implemented. Information is shared appropriately with other professionals. All staff receive refresher safeguarding training, and discuss safeguarding regularly in team meetings and one-to-one supervision. Positive behaviour is consistently promoted. Children and young people are complimented and rewarded through an incentive scheme. Children and young people are given opportunities to make amends, and to learn positively from their experiences. In this way, they learn to understand the impact of their behaviour and how they can make more considered decisions. Incidents of missing from home, and associated risk- taking behaviours, have reduced significantly since the last full inspection in November. Physical restraints rarely take place, and when they do such practices are scrutinised by Inspection report children’s home: SC456910 5 senior staff.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager has an ambitious vision and high expectations of the staff team, and for what children and young people can achieve. She is suitably qualified and has a wealth of experience. She is supported by a dedicated deputy who also works full time in the home, and by the responsible individual, who visits regularly and provides line management support. As a senior team they have a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the home, and take decisive and effective action to ensure that good standards are maintained.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The staff team has been stable over the past year, and its members have worked effectively together to provide consistent care to both the child and the young person. Some changes to the staff team are now envisaged, and the manager is keen to ensure that the child and young person are supported throughout these changes, and that new appointments are made as soon as possible. Staff training opportunities are regularly provided, and all staff are encouraged to complete a professional qualification. The manager and responsible individual are committed to supporting a timely completion of this obligatory qualification for all staff. Staff say that they feel well supported through one-to-one supervision, annual appraisal and team meetings, and describe the manager as ‘brilliant’.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Individual care plans and records are of a good standard. Children and young people have their own child-friendly copy of their care plan. The manager and staff enjoy working with the placing authority, and feel that they work together effectively in the best interests of children and young people. This is echoed by external professionals, who feel that this home compares very favourably with others locally. Staff can access care planning records easily, and are aware of the changing needs of children and young people, and how to meet these needs.
p.5
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The physical environment has improved over the last year, with new decoration, better lighting and repairs to the external rendering. Some matters continue to require attention, including the replacement of a young person’s bedroom carpet, the replacement of flooring in the dining room and the repair or replacement of the front door.
