This provision is good

 The childminder provides a stimulating and inviting environment for children in which to explore, play and learn. She has a wealth of resources to help her support children's learning and development.  Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They quickly form strong bonds with her and settle in to play happily to her care. Children seek out the childminder for comfort, such as warm cuddles, and she supports their emotional development well.  The childminder builds effective partnerships with parents, professionals and other settings children attend from the earliest days. This supports continuity and consistency in children's care and learning.  The childminder continually develops her skills and practice, for example, by attending additional training and seeking professional support, to help her to continue to improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not support children's early reading and writing skills consistently.  Sometimes, the childminder unnecessarily completes tasks for children that they could manage themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of opportunities for children to consistently develop their early writing and reading skills as they play  help children to manage some tasks themselves, particularly hygiene routines, to support their developing independence skills further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children as they played, listened to their interactions and talked to them at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder in relation to observations of children's play, learning and progress.  The inspector sampled documentation, including children's records and evidence of suitability checks.  The inspector took note of parents' written views.  The inspector viewed the areas of the childminder's house and garden used for the care of children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is enthusiastic, ambitious and dedicated to her role in supporting children's welfare, learning and development. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of child protection issues and what procedures to follow if she has any concerns. She uses a range of additional tools, such as risk assessments and effectively implemented policies, to help her promote children's welfare at all times. The childminder reviews her practice and makes plans for ongoing developments and improvements. For example, she recently introduced a mud kitchen to the outdoor area. This has helped support children's physical and mathematical skills, for instance, as they mix, weigh and measure.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well. She makes regular, accurate observations of their learning and development and uses these to monitor the progress children make. Further support is offered where needed to close any gaps. Exciting activities, such as a trip to the shops to buy ingredients to make play dough, engage children in their learning. The childminder carefully plans activities to meet the needs of all children. For example, babies, young children and older children enjoy music sessions together. The childminder supports children's communication well. For instance, she names objects babies play with and provides a commentary as young children play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children enjoy many opportunities to learn about the wider world, for example, as they visit the local beach, play parks and library music sessions. They learn about similarities and differences to each other. The childminder encourages children to adopt a healthy lifestyle. For example, she supplies nutritious snacks for children and supports parents to send suitable meals. Children enjoy energetic play in the fresh air every day. The childminder is a very good role model for children and they behave well. They are confident and self-assured in her care.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development from their starting points. They learn a good range of skills they will need for school, such as playing with their friends and sharing resources. They develop some personal care skills, such as putting their shoes on the correct feet and doing up zips and buttons on their coats. Children learn mathematical skills, for instance, as they recognise numbers and point to how old they are. Children understand simple rules and boundaries, such as taking turns when playing. Children enjoy singing songs and learning how to play musical instruments.
