This provision is good

 The childminder and her assistant promote children's speaking skills well. They offer children lots of opportunities to learn and use new words as they play.  Parents are very positive about the setting. They say it is safe and their children have fun, especially with the many craft activities.  Children make good progress. The childminder identifies aspects of the children's learning that need developing further and provides experiences that enable them to secure their achievements.  The childminder and her assistant provide children with many opportunities to be independent and to learn about how to behave appropriately at mealtimes.  The childminder evaluates the daily experiences she offers children. She now gathers feedback from parents and children about the service she offers.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not always have enough opportunities to think through problems for themselves.  The childminder and her assistant have not focused their professional development on enhancing their good teaching to a higher level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend the opportunities for children to think through their ideas and solve the problems that they encounter  enhance professional development, focusing more specifically on developing knowledge of teaching.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector observed an adult-led activity and evaluated this with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and her assistant. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living and working in the household.  The inspector spoke to children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant make sure the home is safe and secure. They both attend training on child protection and safeguarding. This helps them understand their responsibility to act if they are concerned about children at risk of harm. The childminder supervises her assistant well. She makes sure that her assistant is clear about her role and responsibilities. The childminder tracks children's progress and shares the information with other settings that children attend. She works with parents, gathering information about what children know and can do when she first starts looking after them. The childminder understands her responsibility to complete the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her assistant offer children a variety of play experiences. The childminder uses children's interest in popular stories to extend their learning about food and to help them develop good hand control. The children enjoy making their own caterpillars using apple prints and their fingers. The childminder and her assistant spend lots of time with the children as the play. Both of them sit on the floor and join in with games involving the cars and trains. Children are excited and enjoy the interaction. The childminder plans effectively for children's learning. She makes sure these planned experiences are suitable for children at different stages of development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children settle well into the home. They are confident and show their strong attachment to the childminder and her assistant. Children settle down for their sleep easily, showing they are comfortable and feel at home. The childminder and her assistant have established regular daily routines for eating and washing. They use these routines to help children learn the importance of washing their hands and to develop their knowledge of eating and drinking regularly as part of a healthy lifestyle. The childminder offers daily outdoor experiences. She provides children with the chance to grow their own flowers and vegetables. The childminder and her assistant help children to learn to behave well. They provide children with simple explanations of how to behave and praise them when they are kind and considerate to others.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their individual starting points. They are prepared for learning in school. Children enjoy exploring the world around them. They have particularly enjoyed finding out about size and numbers as they have been growing their sunflowers and pumpkins. Children show their concentration is developing well as they spend time on the activities that interest them. Children are imaginative and enjoy the opportunity to extend some adult-led experiences with their own creative ideas.
