p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not have a good understanding of what to notify to Ofsted. She has not informed them about past significant events that occurred within the household. This is also a breach of the Childcare Register.  At times, the childminder misses opportunities to enable children to be creative and explore their own ideas.  Occasionally the childminder does not use appropriate aged equipment during mealtimes. This does not promote children’s self-esteem and enable them to develop their growing independence.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder provides children with a relaxed and friendly home environment. They develop positive and secure relationships with the childminder.  The childminder implements an effective system to keep track of children’s progress. This helps her to identify any gaps in individual children's learning and ensures all children continue to make at least typical progress.  Overall, the childminder reflects accurately on her practice and shows a commitment to improving outcomes for children.  The childminder works well with parents to supports children’s learning and care. She provides regular feedback on their child’s day to keep them well informed.  Children behave well and respond positively to the childminders praise and encouragement.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to be independent in their own creativity and express their ideas freely  make better use of age appropriate equipment to support children’s growing independence.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder with the children and spoke to her about their learning.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection, about the arrangements for observation, assessment and planning.  The inspector sampled documentation the childminder uses to support her practice.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder lacks knowledge and understanding of the requirement to inform Ofsted of significant events. She did not notify Ofsted of a past incident, which she should have reported. However, this breach of requirements does not have a current, significant impact on children’s welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe and the procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child’s well-being. The childminder continues to improve her teaching skills. For example, she meets with other childminders to discuss childcare issues and uses online support networks to get new ideas for activities.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts well with children to support their learning. She knows them well, and plans activities based around their individual interests and next steps for learning. The childminder supports children's communication and language skills successfully in many ways. For example, when children talk about slugs the childminder asks questions to make them think further. The childminder effectively encourages children to explore numbers and colours. For example, they enjoy building with towers of bricks counting how many bricks they have and naming the colours.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The weakness in the childminder's leadership and management does not compromise children’s overall well-being. Children are settled in the childminders home and have warm and nurturing relationships with her. The childminder sets clear boundaries for behaviour and is a positive role model for children. She promotes healthy lifestyles effectively. For example, children know it is important to wash their hands before mealtimes. Children have daily opportunities to practise their physical skills. For example, they play in the garden, go to the local parks or go for walks along the river. The childminder conducts regular checks on the outings and her home to ensure all children and safe and secure.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop the important skills to support their future learning. They make at least typical progress for their age. They manage everyday care routines well. For example, they hold their utensils correctly at mealtimes and feed themselves. Children are confident talkers and communicate their wishes and needs well. They are motivated to learn and show good concentration as they play and explore the activities.
