This provision is inadequate
The childminder has failed to notify Ofsted of changes to persons over 16 years living in the premises so that checks can be carried out to confirm their suitability. The childminder does not have an effective understanding of how to safeguard children. The childminder has failed to ensure that she maintains a current paediatric first-aid qualification. Young children are not always able to have more choice about what they want to play with as they begin to develop independent learning. The childminder does not always make the most effective use of assessments to focus more precisely on what children need to learn next in order to help them to progress even further.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children develop close relationships with the childminder. Young children enjoy playing games with her and regularly seek her out for comfort and reassurance. Young children are developing good communication skills. They enthusiastically copy sounds that they hear the childminder make and effectively use babbling, pointing and gestures to make their meaning very clear.

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living or working in the household. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through the written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate
Arrangements for safeguarding are not effective. The childminder has not notified Ofsted of changes to persons living in the household in order for them to carry out suitability checks. The childminder has a weak understanding of how to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse. She does not know when to take action in order to protect children from harm. This compromises children's welfare. The childminder has failed maintain a paediatric first-aid qualification. This means her knowledge of how to attend to children should they have an accident while in her care is not up to date. The childminder carries out safety checks of her home. This helps her to identify and minimise risks to children. The childminder asks parents for their views about her service and since registration the childminder has completed some training to keep her teaching practice up to date. She provides parents with information about how they can support children's learning at home.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder completes regular observations of children at play. Young children demonstrate high levels of curiosity as they use their hands, mouths and tongue to actively explore and investigate items that spark their curiosity. They enjoy looking at books and listening to the childminder as she talks to them about the pictures they can see on each page. Young children also show good levels of attention as they work out how to use battery operated toys. They demonstrate perseverance as they press buttons and learn how to move levers up and down. Children enjoy making lights flash and listen with interest to the sounds that the toys make. They show problem-solving skills as they independently work out how to get a brick out of a small container. Parents talk about trips out that the childminder organises for their children.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate
The weaknesses in leadership and management mean that children's welfare is not assured. Nevertheless, the childminder encourages children to drink plenty of fresh water and eat a balanced range of foods. Young children behave well and show good levels of confidence. The childminder uses a reward system for older children. She explains that they can earn a gold star to put on their certificate in acknowledgment of their efforts to share. The childminder talks to children about keeping safe as they take part in activities. She promotes young children's understanding of good hygiene. For example, she teaches them how to wash their hands before they have snacks.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. Young children learn how to balance as they practise their newly acquired walking skills. Children show great pride in their achievements. For example, when they learn how to operate a spinning top. Children show good physical skills and develop hand-to-eye coordination as they competently build a small tower using bricks. Children are effectively developing the key skills that they will need to help them move on to the next stage of their learning or school.
