This provision is good
The childminder has developed her knowledge and practice since registration. She has completed updated training in behaviour management and safeguarding. She has made changes to the way she observes and assesses children's progress and has found this particularly beneficial in her partnership working with parents. Children show a clear attachment to the childminder. She knows them well and recognises when they need a change to the activities, and when they are hungry or tired. Children are confident in choosing their own activities and approach her for comfort as they need it. Parents make positive and complimentary comments about the childminder. They say how much their children enjoy attending and the good range of activities she provides for them. Parents comment on the progress their children are making, particularly in relation to their personal, social and emotional development. The childminder provides effective supervision for children during their play. She talks

to them about how to keep themselves safe and encourages them to help tidy toys away when they have finished playing.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always make the most of opportunities during activities to promote children's understanding of shape and colour. Children have fewer opportunities to develop their deeper thinking during their play.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

extend opportunities to support children's developing awareness of shapes and colours focus more precisely on how to promote children's deeper thinking during activities.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at a sample of documentation and checked the suitability of the adults living in the household. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents from written feedback on the childminder's own questionnaires.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands how to promote children's welfare and keep them safe. She organises the care of children to ensure their individual needs can be met and she keeps records of any visitors. The childminder has a reflective approach to her work and she is keen to keep her knowledge up to date. She recognises the increase in her confidence from the extra knowledge gained through training and she identifies suitable plans for the continued development of her service. Children are provided with a good range of activities that cover all the areas of learning. The activities are planned around children's interests and are very responsive to their individual identified next steps in learning.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children benefit from the childminder's effective teaching. She is very positive and encouraging during her interactions with children. She helps them to develop their communication as she speaks clearly, using descriptive language to increase their vocabulary. The childminder asks well placed questions and gives children time to consider their response before she moves on. Children thoroughly enjoy singing songs, eagerly searching for toys to use as props while they sing. The childminder is skilled at linking activities together. For example, children enjoy creating models that are linked to favourite songs and older children make a model and then sing the song it relates to. Younger children are included in all the activities and have opportunities to explore a variety of pens and the texture of glue. The childminder makes accurate assessments of children's progress that are based on the regular observations she makes.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder has developed an effective working partnership with children's parents. This is based on good communication and sharing of information. The childminder fully values information from home, which helps her to meet each child's needs. Children behave very well. They are familiar with the daily routines and the childminder provides them with interesting and fun activities. She provides a consistent approach so children understand what the expectations for behaviour are. Children begin to develop an awareness of healthy lifestyles. They know the routine for washing their hands before snack time and they enjoy choosing their own fruit. Children benefit from daily outdoor activities. They walk in the woods with the childminder and play in the garden.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are making good progress from their individual starting points. They are learning key skills that result in them being prepared for the next stage in their learning and for starting school. Children develop friendships and older children look out for their younger friends. They are learning how to share, to take turns and to respect one another. Any areas that require extra support are identified, and plans put in place to support children are effective in helping them to catch up.
