Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Not all the required documents are available for inspection. The childminder is unable to find the records for all the children she cares for.  The childminder does not consistently observe and assess children's achievements to enable her to identify their next steps in learning and their level of development.  The childminder does not give children enough time to think and respond to questions during conversations consistently.  The childminder does not regularly reflect on her practice regularly to help her identify weaknesses and focus on the key priorities for improvement.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder is caring and attentive. Children are happy and settled. They form close bonds with the childminder and her family.  The childminder builds friendly partnerships with parents. She shares helpful information with parents through a written daily diary and by text messages and emails.  The childminder ensures that children learn about the importance of staying healthy. They confidently manage their personal care needs and eat healthy snacks and meals.  The childminder has established positive partnerships with the local nursery and primary school to help support children's confidence as they move on to a new setting.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that a record is kept of the full name and date of birth of every child, the name and address of every parent and their emergency contact details 18/10/2017

p.2

Due Date

 complete accurate assessments of children's learning to gain a better understanding of their levels of achievement and identify all gaps in their learning to plan ways to support them to make good progress. 18/10/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 provide more time for children to communicate their own thoughts, understanding and ideas in response to questions  develop self-evaluation to precisely target key weaknesses and areas for improvement that will raise the quality of the provision to a good standard.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during indoor activities and assessed the impact of this on children's learning.  The inspector viewed a focused activity with the childminder and spoke to the children at relevant times during the inspection.  The inspector accompanied the childminder as she collected children from the nearby nursery.  The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability and training of the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from their responses to surveys organised by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is well aware of her child protection responsibilities. She completes relevant training to keep abreast of safeguarding changes and knows how to report concerns about a child's welfare. Since registration, the childminder has moved house. She carries out risk assessments and daily checks of her new home to ensure that children remain safe indoors and outside. However, self-evaluation is not fully effective. Certain weaknesses in teaching, assessment and record keeping are not identified well enough. The childminder is unable to find all the essential records she needs for every child in her care. Despite this, the childminder can remember some details to help her deal appropriately with emergency situations.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Children make some progress in their learning but this is not yet good. The childminder does not check what children know and can do closely enough to ensure precise planning for their next steps in learning. In addition, the childminder is not closely monitoring children's progress to check if there are any gaps in their learning. Children show suitable levels of interest as they talk about colours and recreate patterns while building a tower. They learn about simple technology as they work out how to move a remote-control car forwards and backwards. The childminder promotes children's interest in books and shares favourite stories with them. She encourages children to pronounce words correctly and to build sentences. However, sometimes she does not give them enough time to communicate their thoughts and respond to her questions.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder exchanges information with parents to help children settle in and ensure their emotional well-being. Children enjoy exploring their environment and playing with the childminder. They respond well to her praise and encouragement. The childminder provides an interesting selection of toys. Children are able to make choices and have varied opportunities to build on their understanding of diversity beyond their immediate experience. Children learn to stay safe on outings and wear high-visibility jackets so they can easily be seen. The childminder is vigilant and ensures that children are closely supervised. They hold hands as they walk sensibly along the pavement. Children know to stop, look and listen for traffic before they cross the road.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are not supported to make the best possible progress from their starting points because activities do not consistently target their individual needs or challenge them to learn more. Nevertheless, children learn the basic skills they need in readiness for starting nursery or school. They behave well and develop their understanding of what is acceptable behaviour. Children become independent in managing their own personal care needs.
