This provision is good
Children settle well and are happy and content in the childminder's care. They develop good levels of confidence and feel safe. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection issues and keeps her safeguarding knowledge up to date. She knows how to implement her effective procedures to safeguard children. Children enjoy a range of outings and experiences in the local community, including singing groups, forest school activities and nature walks. Partnership with parents is good. The childminder keeps parents well informed of their children's learning and development, as well as providing daily information about their care. Parents appreciate the childminder's flexibility and the activities she provides. Children make good progress. The childminder provides a nurturing environment for the very young children she cares for, encouraging them to develop the confidence they need for their future learning.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not provide a broad range of opportunities for children to learn about diversity. The childminder has not fully developed strong partnerships with other settings that children attend, to build on what they learn elsewhere.

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed children as they played and spoke with them and with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including children's development records, the childminder's policies and procedures, and her risk assessments. The inspector took account of the views of parents, through their written comments. The inspector looked at the rooms used for childminding as well as the toys and resources the children use.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder attends training and is confident about what to do if she is concerned about a child in her care. She implements effective risk assessments in the home and on outings to enable children to play and learn in safety. The childminder demonstrates a commitment to improving her provision through self-evaluation and professional development. Recent training on literacy has consolidated her understanding of how to encourage children to practise their early writing skills through a range of activities. For example, younger children enjoy painting with water outside, watching their marks disappear in the sunshine. The childminder uses regular observations of children to assess their development, and shares their progress with parents on a regular basis.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides a broad range of resources and plans challenging activities to encourage children to learn through their play. She supports babies well as they test their skills. For example, she sits alongside while they push wooden balls into slots, naming the colours and encouraging them to try. They experiment, first using the hammer to hit the balls, and then pushing them down gently with their hand. They try again, pushing harder each time, until they succeed. The childminder praises their efforts, and supports their understanding effectively. For example, she uses words, reinforced with smiles and claps. Toddlers are motivated to learn and the childminder uses their interests well to support their learning. For example, she introduces counting, colour and new vocabulary, such as 'bridge' and 'bend' as they play with their favourite train set.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children feel at home with the childminder. She follows their home routines and responds promptly when they show that they are hungry or tired. For example, when toddlers rub their eyes, she says, 'I know you're tired, aren't you?' She finds their comfort blanket and they smile broadly, putting their arms up to be lifted and taken to bed. The childminder has warm relationships with the children, who turn to her for reassurance. She provides nutritious food and encourages their good health. For example, even the youngest children learn good hand-hygiene routines, pulling up their sleeves and washing independently. Children have regular opportunities to be physically active outside and enjoy making dens, stirring mud pies and splashing in puddles.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Young children develop good levels of confidence so they are ready for the next stage of their learning. They learn to make marks with their fingers in paint and foam, encouraging an interest in very early writing skills. Their language development is good and they learn to play well alongside each other to prepare them for cooperative play and sharing. Babies feel secure and toddlers are self-assured, independently exploring the toys and resources.
