p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder evaluates her practice well to identify relevant areas to improve children's experiences and her procedures.  The childminder provides a good variety of resources and activities that link to individual children's interests. Children are motivated to learn and behave well.  The childminder has supportive partnerships with parents. For example, they work well together to help children develop their speaking and reading skills at home.  Older children gain important skills to prepare them well for school. The childminder provided opportunities for children to solve problems. She challenged them to build ramps to explore how cars could travel in both directions onto a platform.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder's assistants do not make best use of opportunities to develop children's independence and an awareness of how to keep themselves safe.  The childminder does not focus sharply on the assistants' teaching practice to raise it to a higher level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve the assistants' teaching practice to build on children's independence and to help them learn how to keep safe  focus the assistants' ongoing professional development more sharply on raising the quality of teaching.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the childminder's house and garden.  The inspector spoke to the childminder, her assistants and the children at suitable times.  The inspector observed the childminder and assistants interacting with the children indoors and in the garden.  The inspector looked at a sample of the childminder's documents, including children's records and staff qualifications. She discussed the childminder's procedures for keeping children safe.  The inspector spoke to the childminder about how she plans to develop the service that she provides.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands how to keep children safe from harm. She offers the assistants the opportunity to access relevant training, such as safeguarding. They are clear about what procedures to follow if they have a concern about the welfare of a child. The childminder and her assistants have appropriate first-aid qualifications to help them deal with any accidents or injuries. The childminder completes regular safety checks. She removes or minimises any risks to children to ensure they stay safe. The childminder keeps her knowledge and skills updated to benefit children's learning and development. She successfully works in partnership with other childminders and nursery schools to share good practice and training resources.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her assistants track children's progress thoroughly and uses the comprehensive information well to plan activities that help children progress to the next stage of their learning and development. She offers a good balance between planned activities and time for children to choose what they want to do. The childminder works closely with other providers to inform her planning and to help children who may need specialist support to progress. The childminder and her assistants provide good opportunities for children to develop early mathematics and communications skills. They ask children to count how many chairs they need, to identify shapes in the garden and to use their imaginations to draw a princess.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form very close bonds with the childminder and her assistants, who provide a warm and attentive environment. The childminder helps children to feel safe and secure. For example, she gathers information from parents about their child before they start and uses this to provide food and toys that are familiar. Children settle quickly. The childminder gives children ample opportunities for fresh air and physical exercise. Children enjoy playing in the garden and visiting local parks. She provides freshly cooked meals and opportunities for children to learn about healthy diets. Children generally behave well.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points and meet the levels of development typical for their age. Children explore ideas, choose toys to play with and use their imagination. They enjoy pretending to be adults, such as using toys to vacuum and tidy their house. Older children are ready for school, for example, they count with confidence, speak clearly and learn to play cooperatively with their friends. They learn to manage their feelings and emotions.
