strong focus on developing children's independence and confidence. For instance, during a baking activity, young children are given the time and support to prepare, measure and mix all the ingredients by themselves which they enjoy enormously.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Systems for monitoring and tracking children's progress are not yet fully developed or precise enough to achieve the best possible outcomes. The childminder does not routinely seek the views of parents and children to help review the quality of her practice and identify areas to improve.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

refine systems for tracking children's progress so that planning for their next steps is even more precise to help them make the best possible progress enhance the self-evaluation process and involve parents and children in identifying where aspects of the setting can be improved.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and the suitability of persons living and working at the premises. The inspector spoke to children and had a tour of the premises, viewing the areas used by children. The inspector took account of the views and opinions of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The experienced childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of how to recognise any safeguarding concerns. They have recently updated their knowledge of child protection and know the procedures to follow in the event of any concerns, including protecting children from extreme views. The childminder supervises children well and completes regular risk assessments to identify and minimize any potential hazards. The childminder and her assistant work well together as a team. They have a shared understanding of policies and procedures and keep up to date with current requirements. The childminder has used the support of the local authority to make good improvements in her observations and assessments of children's learning since the previous inspection.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides a wide range of stimulating age-appropriate toys and resources that children can access independently. High-quality interactions with the childminder and her assistant help children develop good language skills. For instance, while playing with cars, children discuss the need 'to get more petrol to make the car go' and talk about the need to go 'to the garage to fix it' and 'keep safe'. The childminder asks probing questions and is skilled at providing children with time to think and respond. Each activity is used to develop a range of learning opportunities, including early writing skills and mathematics. For instance, after baking, children count the cakes, describe their size and discuss the lines and shapes they draw in flour on the table. The childminder and her assistant use the information from observations and assessments well to plan for the children's next stage of learning.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder and her assistant are kind and attentive to the needs of the children. They provide regular praise and encouragement and the children seek them out to share their experiences. Children have many opportunities to develop their physical skills. They have access to an outdoor area and visit the local park regularly for lots of fresh air, exercise and to investigate plants and seasonal changes. Children's health and well-being are a priority and the childminder teaches children about the benefits of good hygiene practices and eating healthily. The childminder and her assistant manage children's behaviour effectively, using a calm, consistent approach. Children behave well.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children develop the key skills to prepare them for the next stage in their learning and move on to school. They communicate well and make choices confidently. Children develop independence and show determination to manage tasks for themselves. They enjoy sharing books and demonstrate creativity as they become engrossed in role play.
