This provision is good

 The childminder effectively monitors children's individual progress. She swiftly identifies any gaps in learning and makes appropriate interventions.  The childminder evaluates her teaching in collaboration with her co-childminder. For instance, she has used feedback from her co-childminder to help ensure that children remain well engaged in play and do not spend time waiting.  Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder keeps parents well informed about children's learning. One of the ways she does this is by sharing information about children's next steps and her planning to help parents guide their children's learning at home.  New children are confident in the childminder's home. They race around on bicycles in the garden and proudly demonstrate to the childminder how fast they can go.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not extend children's understanding of shape and counting as effectively as possible.  The childminder does not fully consider children's learning styles when planning activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build further on children's growing understanding of shape and counting  make the most of information gathered through observations and assessments to plan more precisely for children's styles of learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder. He looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living and working in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder reflects on her practice and uses feedback from parents, children and other professionals to help her make improvements. For example, she responded to children's idea of having a pet by getting a rabbit for them to look after. She effectively teaches them about how to care for living things. The childminder attends a good range of training that helps enhance her knowledge and skills further, including how to support children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities. Safeguarding is effective. Since moving into her house, the childminder has identified possible hazards to children and taken steps to minimise risks. For instance, she has had a fence fitted to help prevent children falling from the raised part of her garden. The childminder knows how to report child protection concerns to the relevant safeguarding agencies.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides daily opportunities for children to develop and learn new skills. For example, in the garden, children enjoy making marks with chalk on the path, developing their early writing skills. They are imaginative outdoors and act out experiences from home, including washing the toy cars. The childminder extends children's learning about animals by hiding photographs of animals in sand for them to find and name. She teaches young children the skills they need for the next stage in their learning. The childminder encourages them to say single words, use tools to manipulate dough and play alongside others. She effectively promotes their communication, physical and social development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides varied resources and toys that children choose from independently or ask for by selecting the corresponding photograph in a book. Older children are becoming increasingly independent, such as going to the toilet without help. The childminder encourages them to wash their hands after using the toilet to promote their understanding of good hygiene practices. She provides a range of nutritious meals for children, to help promote their good health. Children's behaviour is good and the childminder effectively helps children to follow rules, such as sharing toys.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning. They are creative and have their own ideas, such as what they want to make using dough. Children can label colours correctly and they pay close attention to what happens when they mix two colours together. Children's communication and language skills are developing well. They use a range of vocabulary to describe the texture and temperature of dough, such as 'squidgy' and 'chilly'. Toddlers are quickly becoming toilet trained.
